DETROIT _JEWISH CHRONICLE and The Legal Chronicle

MESSAGE OF 5706 to 5707

By RABBI ISAAC STOLLMAN

But they engaged in a wider
struggle. Theirs (these few) was
the vision of an entire people.
Theirs was the heart of all Jewry.
They struck out when their
brothers had been subjected to in.
jury upon injury, to unmitigated
blasphemy of justice. They sought
to fight the war against a dis-
guised Nazism all over again. The
struggle in Palestine was not a
struggle for personal survival and
gain as the outcome of a sense
of responsibility for the Diaspora
Jew. The Palestinian Jew is Dias-
pora conscious.
Had we been imbued with that
same sense of justice and compas-
sion we would have launched the
Palestinian campaign for our Eu-
ropean brethren. Jewish strength
should lie in America if only Jew.
ish idealisni were equal to our
numbers and means.
But we were the observers or
spectators, who alternately ap-
plauded the Jew and castigated
the British. We have called ral-
lies at Madison Square Garden
and in many cities of the United
States. We have sent—some of us
—our letters to Truman and con-
gressmen. We have given our
donations. But a few welLinten-
Honed leaders or sprinkling of
Zionists cannot create a mass
movement, a world cry, a uni-
versal demand for justice. The
leaders in Palestine did not fight
alone. It was the people that
fought. It was an army that num-
bered every able bodied man and
woman, notwithstanding that there
it was all a covert struggle under
the pain of death.
If we, here at the beginning and
throughout the hostilities in Pal-
estine, would have assumed our
responsibility in a true proportion
we would have greatly eased the
burdens of the Yishuv. Our breth-
ren would have enjoyed the faith
and knowledge that world Jewry
is not only conscious of their state
and crisis but in the forefront of
heir ranks. But our general apa-

From the time these lines reach
the reader there is little expecta-
tion of a change or Improvement
in the crystallizing situation in
Palestine. Thus the writer of
these lines feels free to give ex-
pression to what he considers a
vital message to Jewry.
American Jewry has accompa-
nied this year through history
with much of the same fatalism
and depression that we witness
the last rites administered to the
dead. We suffer from the immo-
bility of our strength and the con-
fusion in our 'minds and the pain
in our hearts. The will to action
has been Immobilized through the
paralysis of distance and contact
with the realities of Jewish suf-
fering and full self and historical
consciousness. We haven't shown
that self-pride and constructive
activity that rebels against bene-
volent tyranny, that overthrows
oppressors, that has created or
accomplished any great and worth-
while change in the history of
man. We have not helped morale
effectively in Palestine or fought
whole heartedly our brothers'
fight, which is our own fight and
the struggle of all justice seeking
individuals In the world.
I do not intend to give a resume
here of our part in the political
explosions in Palestine. The facts
are the property of all readers of
the press. What I would point out
is the following: That the battle
for Palestine should have been
fought in America rather than in
the Yishuv. There are no British
tommies In America and the press
cannot be silenced. Our only lim-
its would be our own morale.
For an indeterminate length of
time, the Battle for Palestine and
for the admission of DP's has
been to a large extent a problem
concerning (and to be dealt with
by) Palestinian Jews—not world
Jewry.
Throughout the friction In Pal- t,—
estine many authorities and Zion-
I
ist leaders here in America, when A Very Happy
approached for an opinion, stated Rosh Hashonah
"'We will note the reaction of
Palestinian Jewry. They will de-
termine Zionist policy." Well and
good. The problem affects them
first. Again they are the most
Market
ardent of Zionists ostensibly. But
callously we threw down the
gauntlet to the Palestinian Jews.

eousness indignant. But it was
not strategic. It was not politic.
The self sacrifice and maccabcan 1/4
courage demonstrated by the colo-
nists on behalf of the safety of
their immigrating brethren — a
glorious gesture of a people in
these dark days—helped foster the
attitude now prevalent among
American Jewry that the DP

Palestinian one.
Holiday Season
It should be remembered that
the Yishuv could have carried on
in peace with their neighbors, the 4825 Russell

Arabs and the British—if., they
would have left well enough alone.

thy and passive repudiation of
participation in their struggle has
left them with no alternative. So
they fight alone with fists against
tanks, and accusations in censored
newspapers.
The entire picture in Palestine
would have been considerably dif-
ferent had we fought the Battle
of Palestine over here, not with
guns, but with the strongest pos-
sible language. Everyone can rea-
lize that the battle for Palestine
conducted in Palestine must bring
a wave of British strength, where-
as the campaign for the mandate
of Eretz Yisroel, if launched and
fought in this country, would have
given us the following strategic
position:
1. Palestinian Jewry could con-
tinue their work— in agriculture,
industry — without affording the
British the excuse for converting
Palestine into a battlefield and
armed camp.
2. We would not be harassed by
the British—to act covertly—nei-
ther would we bring the issue to
a level that could be classed as
terrorism by any stretch of preju-
dice and political interpretation.
But the difficulties of Zionist
leaders are the result of this DP
politic—of poor logistics in polit-
ical diplomacy. We see the colon-

ists' courage and idealism on
American soil in American Jewish
hearts.
What shall be our weapons? To
paraphrase General Barker who
showed the spirit of the British
Army In Palestine in his state-
ment, "let us hurt them where it
hurts most—In their pockets" (ban
on fraternization with Jews), we
say "let us attack the oppressors
where it hurts the most—through
the American press—through un-
exampled unison and volume of
public opinion—through our gov-
ernment agencies—through the de-
mand for a public international
trial with Great Britain in the
UN or in extraordinary session.
Let us remove the burden from
our Palestinian brethren. Let the
British send tommies here when
justice cries out. Let them censor
news here. Let them forbid public
gatherings here. Let them ignore
wave after wave of an exacer-
bating public demand that will
not be quenched.

We have to become the blood-
redeemers of our brethren in Ell.
rope, in Palestine. though apathy.
Enough vicarious fighting. We are
fighting for survival. We are fight.
ing for a leetter world. If Pales.
tine contiAsles to be compromised,
there will be no peace for the
Jew, a hollow victory for the peo.
pies who fought this war for a
dream of a better world.
