Rabbi Moses Fischer Offers a Vision of Hope

not have occurred that way!
The observation of Koheleth be-
came only too true in regard to
the present situation of Jewry in
Palestine:
"Where it should be justice,
there is wickedness."

By RABBI MOSES FISCHER

It is my prayerful hope that at
least the kernel and marrow of
the Jewish people will celebrate
this year's Rosh Hashonah more
as Jews, as the loyal sons of Is-
le!, than as individuals who are
ticerned only with their per-
. .nal welfare.
,- I pray that as we turn our eyes
backward to survey what the past
year has brought to the Jewish
people at large and only secondly
shall we consider what it brought
to us individually.
I am confident that if we form
resolutions for the next year, we
shall do it first as Jews and in
regard to what we must do, and
what are our duties toward Jew-
ry, toward our people, and only
after hating done it, shall we
formulate our resolutions as how
to improve and to better our per_
sonal life.
GREETINGS TO ZION
We shall indeed this year, as in
all previous years, exchange the
seasonal greetings with each
other, but I feel that this year
our first greeting shall be ad-
dressed and directed to Zion, to
her noble sons and daughters
who have battled and laid down
their lives that Zion shall be no
longer merely a "Promised Land,"
but rather a factuality, a Home-
land!
I pray that firstly it shall be a
homeland to the hundreds of
thousands of Jews who are yet
homeless, friendless, who wander
yet as the eternal Jew on the
surface of the earth, of whom
even in tills year of the new "ap-
portioning of the world," is true
the song of Byron, The bird has
its nest, the fox its cave, Israel
has only its grave."
Indeed, I9rael has only a grave.
6 MILLION ARE GONE
There is no people, and no na-
tion on earth which indeed pos-
sesses as gigantic a grave as Is-
rael! A grave where in 6,000,000
Jews are resting — resting in the
literary sense of the word: as the
grave became to them really a ha-
ven of rest from a life which was
made by their "civilized and cul-
tured foes" even more terrible,
more painful, more terrible than
death itself, than the grave itself.
The intensive longing and yearn-
ing after Zion, created in the Jew-
ish people the concept that in the
fullness of time, when the dead
shall be resurrected to life, the
Jews who are buried in foreign
lands, on foreign soil, shall some-
how, some way, dig a tunnel
which shall lead Them directly
through subterranean paths to
Eretz Israel where they shall rise
to a new deathless life.
NEV LIFE VISIONED
We, the Jews of our generation,
in our pasfionate belief in eternal
Justice, in our firm faith in the
fairness, righteousneses and good-
will of the Allied nations who
fought for the freedom of the
small nations, for human rights,
for democracy, and in order to
make the world "a more livable
and lovable place" — we had the
firm fait-it that from the gigantic
grave wherein six million godly
and innocent Jews were interred,
within which the Jews of a whole
continent, of all Europe, with
their unique record of services
for all European nations, and for
_. mankind at large—were liquidated
-,-. that from the dark, gigantic

A PLACE OF INIQUITY

Mrs. Roosevelt Sends
Rosh Hashonah
Greetings
I am very glad of this oppor-

tunity to send a message to
the readers of the Detroit Jew-
ish Chronicle on the occasion
of Rosh Hashonah.
During the past several years
the hearts of Jewish people
everywhere have ached for
their brothers in Europe and
there is still reason for grave
concern.
Let us all hope and pray that
the New Year will bring a so-
lution to this very serious sit-
uation.

Yours very sincerely,
(Signed)
ELEANOR ROOSEVELT

grave of our 6,000,000 martyrs, a
straight path will be opened to
lead the survivors of the great
massacre to Zion, where Israel
shall be resurrected to a new,
glorious historic life in order that
no more shall a strange land be-
come the grave of Jewry.

A IIOPE OF JEWRY

We hoped that the nations of
the earth will feel themselves
happy and blessed that it is pos-
sible to them to compensate at
least to a certain extent Jewry
for the unique tragedy that has
visited her, for the 6,000,000 of the
noblest and truest and loyareat
members that our faith has lost!
We hoped that the nations will
be glad and happy to assign to
Jewry as a Homeland Palestine
where the religion of Israel, its
passion for justice would again
unfold their wings, create and en-
rich mankind with new ethical
and social values, where the Jew
would again live a normal, peace-
ful, happy life, tending his vine-
yard, tilling the ground, dream-
ing Messianic dreams and advance
by their righteous and religious
living the era of human brother-
hood.
But, alas, that things should

Zion, that divinely appointed
outpost of justice and righteous-
ness, became itself the stage
whereon the greatest iniquity and
wickedness are perpetrated. On
the holy soil of Zion, tanks are
rumbling, trenches' are dug, guns
are hoisted, bullets are flying,
barbed wire concentration camps
are erected, human beings—creat-
ed in the image of God—scions of
the oldest nation — are hunted,
captured, carried away into un-
known destinations.
We ask — to paraphrase the
worlds of the Midrash—of the vic-
tims of the human hunt and in-
human treatment, "Why are you
deprived of your freedom? Why
are you carried away 'By the ser-
vants of the law into custody?

What are your sins and trans-
gressions?"
"We were born as Jews, we
lived on a land where our ances-
tors lived, worked and served
their country for 'a thousand
years! Suddenly, we were torn
from our homes! The lucky ones
among us were degraded to the
most arduous slavery, while the
others were quartered, killed, cre-
mated and buried, unwept, un-
known, unsung,—finally, the hour
of redemption came, the forces of
rightbousness won the war.

WE RAN TO OUR MOTHER
"We, the survivors, found most
of our families exterminated, only

single persons were left from
whole communities, like single

crimsoned with the blood of our
nearest and derrest, where new

perils awaited us.
"So we ran, we escaped, to the

arms of our mother, to our prom.
ised Homeland for safety for
protection, to rebuild from its
ruins our lives. That Th our sin."
There are supreme and sublime
moments in human life, when a
man rises from above his little
self, above his narrow selfishness,
when he feels himself as a living
member of his people and nation.
It fs my prayerful Wish that we
shall celebrate the coming Rosh
Has7tonah more as Jews than as
individuals, that we shall formu-
late our most holy and sacred
resolutions in regard to how we
can serve at our best, our nation
and people, "with all hearts, souls
and means."

It is a real pleasure for us to be able
to convey to our many Jewish cus-
tomers and friends our most sincere
wishes for a Prosperous New Year!
