realities of the situation. I found
the same thing while touring the
British zone in Germany. Admit-
ting that the persecuted Jews
were in far worse physical and
mental condition than most of the
other displaced persons, British of.
fleet's steadfastly maintained they
could not and should not recog-
nize the Jews as a separate cate-
gory of Displaced Persons and
that they had to be considered like
all others along purely nationalis-
tic lines. Although in some re-
spects their attitudes and policies
with respect to Displaced Persons
were liberal and understanding,
they persisted in their point of
view that in spite of their unique
and greater hardships and priva-
tions, the Jews were not entitled
to any special consideration:Their
attitude cannot be characterized
as anti-Semitic for England has
In many ways shown generosity
toward and real concern for the
plight of persecuted Jews, as for
example her offering a haven of
refuge to sixty thousand of them;
rather It seemed like an ostrich-
like quality of stubbornly refusing
to lift one's head from the sand
to see and admit tho realities of
the situation and a too self-as-
sured persistence upon a pattern
of conduct totally Inadequate to
meet the real problem.
To date, the British have accom-
plished practically nothing toward
solving the Palestine problem;
there has been plenty of bungling.
I do not understand their utter
impatience and despair. In spite
of the report of the Anglo-Ameri-
can Commission, it seems that the
Arabs by threats of violence can
prevent any British action in the
direction of carrying out the rec-
ommendations. Every one knows
that the same amount of force on
the part of British troops as is
now being directed against the
Jews would suffice to put into et-
febt the recommendation of the
Anglo-American Commission. But
it is by no means clear that force
would be needed. In spite of their
protestations and threats, it is not
at all clear that the Arabs would
turn a completely deaf ear to the
claims and wishes of the surviv.
ing victims of Nazism and Fasc-
ism if determined negotiations
were undertaken and I doubt that
they have been. I wonder, for ex-
ample, whether anyone has sug-
gested that If 100,000 certificates
were made available for the res-
cue of the persecuted, no other
request for immigration into Pal-
estine would be made for a given

form and enough of any possibil-
ity of experiencing it again.
The Arabs have not been able
to demonstrate to anyone but
themselves that anyone would be
harmed by granting' this wish of
the. concentration camp survivors
who could be taken to Palestine.
It is the ultimate that the Arabs
are resisting—and understandably
so—and rather naturally they re-
sist each step in that direction,
but in carrying their opposition
and resistance and threats to this
extent they can be and in my
opinion are wrong. If that must
be demonstrated to tam, then so
be it — in the interests of justice
and humanity.
Tho Arab representatives ac-
cused President Truman of "irre-

ing, they established their own Ir-
Committee, in its latest outburst
showed as little understanding of
the situation and the problem as

tion would not be welcome to
many Zionists but I may be ex-
cused for suggesting some such
compromise, if it has not already

shattered remnants of European
Jewry would benefit thereby, to
postpone for a reasonable period
further considerations of their ul-
timate plans and dreams.
