By DR. ABBA HILLEL SILVER
President, Zionist Organ;zation
of America
When it is said that the people
of Israel are the toughest among
the people of the earth, what is
meant is not our physical strength,
but the persistent fact of Jewish
5tence. There is in us some
lefinable strength, some inex-
astible reservoir of power,
which enables us to surmount one
I defeat after another, and to over-
come powers — empires — much
stronger than ours.
This is not sermonics but his-
tory. And in such an unequal
struggle, we are engaged at this
moment. We were engaged in the
some struggle fifteen years ago,
but then we still had a great Eu-
ropean Jewish community to help
us in this struggle for survival
and renascence. Today we have
lost that spiritually creative—for
us, spiritually replenishing— com-
munity of the world. Today we
li are fighting on alone — with six
million of our people already slain.
By so much, by a third, we are
diminished. But we are fighting
on, and—by the grace of God—we
will win through!
The report of the Anglo-Ameri-
can Committee had some very
sharp things to say about the ag-
gressive nationalism of the Jews.
It spoke of the rights of -every-
body except Jews. On the right of
Britain to establish a new nation
in Transjordania, to call into
existence this sovereign nation of
slightly more than 300,000 people,
which before long will have a
seat in the Assembly of the United
Nations. But it is all wrong for
the Jewish people — one of the
great, historic peoples of the

earth, without whose spiritual
contributions to civilization, there
would be no Christianity, no Is-
lam, no ethical code; which gave
to Mankind great visions: Jus-
tice, Brotherhood, Peace, the con-
cepts of the dignity of human life
and of compassion; which gave
to the world its prime figures in
every field of endeavor; which, in
the last war sent thousands of
thousands of its sons to fight
against fascism, against nazism,
against the enemies of civiliza-
tion —it is all wrong for this peo-
ple to want to be a nation among
the nations of the world at least
equal to Transjordania.
We are political nationalists in-
sofar as we seek for our people
that which every other historic
people on the face of the earth
possesses: a national home, a na-
tional status. To us this issue is
not a plaything for idle hours, it
is not a diversion. It is not the
conviction of irresponsible parties.
The disastrous line of decline in
the fortunes of our people—from
1903 when forty-five Jews were
killed in the pogrom in Kishinev,
to the last few years, when six
million Jews were killed in gas
chambers and abattoirs —• traces
