Amterkait eufisk Periodical Cotter Friday, September 27, 1946 CLIFTON AVENUE - CINCINNATI 20, 01110 DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE and The Legal Chronicle but because the non-Jews force us to. Since we entered upon the Main Street era of our existence, that is since we, became eman- cipated and more or less assimi- lated with the life surrounding us, many of us have tried to be so- ciable with non-Jews on that busy highway and to avoid our Jewish business competitors—or even just fellow-Jews who are not competi- tors. Sometimes we succeed, more ten ten than not the results are rtbreaking. Yet we never give We try and try again to win favor of our Gentile fellow- citizens and we think that the 1' process will be made easier for us by criticizing our own fellow- Jews and by giving them the cold shoulder. As Jews who live and do business on the Main Streets of the Western world, many of the most successful and Influen- tial among us are torn between self•hatred and the necessity for embracing each other and crying "brother" when the Gentile repudi. ates us. New York, the biggest Main Street of them all, one vast cen- ter of commerce and of culture- over-the-counter, is seemingly a Jewish town—as all the American anti-Semites, and foreign ones as well, would have us believe. And yet I often shudder to hear New York Jews speaking about each other. This, however, does . not mean that the majority of them have the least intention to escape from the Jewish community—no, not that. It is simply that living in the world's great competitive market-place where people are taught that the great goal In life Is to "get ahead" and the devil take the hindmost, Jews who have a long history in common and who feel that history in their bones are uncertain as to whether they should strange or embrace one another. Of late years Palestine too has become a world's main highway, a sort of competitive Main Street among the nations of the world and that perhaps may be why we Jews, desiring Palestine for our- selves, seem to have so much trouble over it. Since World War ]`Palestine has been an important military and air base and a great outlet for oil, a world highway rather than a byway, and there- NEW YEAR'S MESSAGE from JOHN S. KNIGHT In this Rosh Hashonah of 5707 all people of good will who have the faith of God in their hearts will offer a prayer of hope in this hour of agony and sacrifice. It Is a time, as the Scriptures tell us, when God passes judgment upon all the inhabitants of the earth; a season of self examination and repentance, therefore, and the reconcilia- tion of man with man, and man with God, in the eternal seeking for deeper understanding of the spiritual life. All history proclaims the great contributions of the Jews to the service of mankind; not alone in the highest spiritual ideals of Israel, but In the arts and sciences, inifferature and in the development of a world culture. May the blowing of the Shofor, on thl /day of deepest spiritual significance, sound a new note of 'hope for your peo- ple of the earth who have contributed so much and who have suffered so greatly; that God, in His infinite wisdom, shall bring His light to all mankind, that there may be peace on earth. Arabs, dreaming of a re- newal of their former power, Imagine that they will be strang- led without that small strip of Palestine sea-coast. The British believe that Palestine is vitally necessary to maintain their Em- pire communications and to repel an attack by a possible enemy on those communications. The Rus- sians are jealous of England's power in the Mediterranean area and would like to get her cut of Palestine. And so it goes. Palestine, when the Jews had their own kingdom there and cre- ated a religion which changed the whole aspect of the Western world, was definitely not on the world's highway. It was rather a small out-of-the-way country in- habited mainly by poor, pious peasants, and surrounded by rich- Page Eleven fished themselves on Palestine's Main Street are different from the Main Street Jews of most other lands. There they intend to cre- ate a truly Jewish place that will be free of the self-hatreds of other lands. And there, too, they are discovering the importance of the byways, the out-of-the-way quiet places of the world, and creating Jewish farms and factories which will be closely interwoven with their own cities, which will not Rosh Hashonah Greetings and Best Wishes to All f Mr. and Mrs. Joshua Karbal • and Daughter Norma Lee FRANK BROS.
