DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE and The Legal Chronicle

for on Rosh Hashonah.
There is something else that
the cards bring to mind. It is re-
assuring to remember that Jews
can laugh, or at least that they
once did, We have learned to as-

sociate the word "Jew" only with
tragedy. That is why these cards
are so valuable to us. There are
times when our children may
doubt that our heritage has ever
been a happy . one. The cards re-

mind us that not every hnliday
is a memorial.
The cards also voice a silent
promise. They area goal as well
as a reminder. They are some-
thing to aim for. What we once

achieved, we can once again
achieve. The peace that allowed
for /tumor and happiness is not
only past, but is possibly in the
future. Not in the near future,
but in the future. We are veteran

troops, we Jews. We know that it
is all a matter of digging our
foxholes deeply enough. Another
Rosh Hashonah; another battle
ended, another begun. We'll sur-
vive.

How Will You Buy?

One of the country'. most responsible
organizations recently completed a national
survey covering, among other questions,
how people Intended to pay for future
purchases, with the following interesting
results:

"Almost half, 40.7%, state positively
that they do not plan to draw on even
their cash savings; 77% say they def-
initely plan not to cash any War Donde
for buying, but are ready to spend
liberally of their current Income; 45%
say they plan to make some of their
purchases on the instalment or time
payment plan."

Income—Reserve-
Credit

While these reeults are significant, we
hope that a survey will soon be made which
will show bow people intertd to use their
Terns—savings, War Bonds—their in-
come and their credit in whichever com-
bination sates them the moat money.

out combinations best suited to their
individual needs. Very frequently,
through the Instaloan plan, Im portant
savings ars effected by borrowing
rather than cashing War Bonds. These
savings result when the income on the
bond. is greater than the cost of the
lost&loin. In addition to saving., this
plan preserves financial reserves to
take advantage of opportunities or to
meet emergencies. Emergencies, by
the way, seem to occur less frequently
when ono Is prepared is meet them.

The Great Danger

Tragically, those who can least
afford it pay the highest costs when

borrowing money. Suddenly faced

with the need for more money than

any provision for credit, they pay

almost any premium.

Checking accounts save time and inconvenience. Cancelled checks are per-
manent receipts; monthly statements provide bookkeeping records and im-
portant information for your income tax return. The use of checks rather than

cash minimizes the danger of loss and theft. Can you afford NOT to have a

checking account?
