Page Fourteen DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE and The Legal Chronicle Alia? Me With Sally Fields C HICAGO, MONDAY, Sept. 10, ‘-4 at 3:30 a. m. . . . Mummm! What a luxurious feeling to crawl in between two cool sheets in a comfy bed after no sleep for prac- tically 48 hours and a tiresome train ride, on an uncomfort able seat, much too narrow to even sit, let alone sleep on ... It's heavenly! It is only looking forward to that Sally Fields super, super sensation that keeps me going day after day with so little rest. There you've got the secret of "how I do it." Try it. • YOWSSAH! IT'S ALL over but the "Oh's and Ah's." The kid's had her "complex" removed. (I hope!) . . . Remember Al Masse, Free Press photographer? He's president of the Press Photographers Associa- tion here, has been "shooting them" at the Chicago Sun for the past seven or eight years, and be- sides runs the Candid Photo Shop. His ideas on baby and wedding albums are something to talk about and has been taking Chica- go society by storm. You ought to see them. I've been trying to persuade him to inaugurate his ideas in Detroit, too. Al has a very sweet wife (nee Nellie Ben), a lovely home and three fine youngsters .. . • AMONG OTHER DETROITERS I've run into were Eli Frank ("Hot Dog" his friends call him) here on several weeks' business . . . Un- derstand "Pinky" Horowitz is in town and doing Okeh ... Talked with the "Izz" Hahnowitz's—all thrilled with their new apartment but having one whale-o-a-time shopping for furniture and fur- nishings . . . Visited with the Bel- son's. What a grand dinner Mrs. B. served—a typical "Shabestige" meal with "gefilte" fish, lockshen, tzimas, 'n everything . . . Both Bea and Lil looking quite dashing in their new fall clothes and perky hats. • GIRLS, WHILE I'M on the sub- • NOW OPEN Every Sunday! Drive Out to the Beautiful CLUB RIO No Cover) No Minimum! It was presented by Sax-Kay un- der the sponsorship of the Louis Marshall Women and the Louis Marshall B & P group. What a "splendiferous" array of furs and jackets—luscious minks with full backs and full flowing parachute or balloon sleeves, Per- sians, highly and exquisitely styled; white broadtail jackets stunningly youthful and flatter- ing; plating fox stoles, luxuriously draped around the figure; original millinery creations showing gobs and gobs of feathers. Some went completely Victorian (those were my favorites) with the Cavalier plumes that recalled an elegant era, an age of bold deeds and dashing heroes. And there were original Nettie Rosen- stein dresses, beautifully designed in simple elegance. • WHAT A SMALL WORLD — While waiting for some friends at Edith's Millinery Salon, I was introduced to a very charming lady, a former Detroiter—Mrs. Simon Wax and sister-in-law of Ruby Wax, Detroit. Also discov- ered that an offspring of Mrs. Wax was married to an offspring of the Ross's of Ann Arbor whom I also know quite well... While visiting the Antl-Defa- mation offices (and what a busy place that is), Archie Davidson introduced me to Ben J. Gold- man of the executive offices of ADL (a former Toledoian). Dropped into the Morrison Hotel for late nite-cap and ran into Fran Nussbaum and Thel- ma, also from Toledo but who boast oodles of friends in De- troit... Yessir, It's a small world. • IN ORDER TO HEAD off tele- phone calls from the spendthrift entertainment seekers who're plan- ning to attend the General Com- mittee meeting of Bnai Brith Sept. 22, 23, 24 in Chicago, and who'll want to know where to go for a good dinner, here's a few to choose from: IT'S TERRIFIC! The Sheldon Furs would like to sponsor a B. B. Girl's bowling team. Dishes you've never heard of, so oddly are they named and Canto- nese cooking you've never thought possible, join forces which makes the Shangri-la, one of Chicago's truly great gourmet meccas. De- scribing Shangri-la's cooking would be like an amateur painter doing a masterpiece—if you know what I mean. The wee-hours of the morning suppers and nite.caps take on added significance at the Singa- pore on Rush street. Here any nite of the week, Chicago's celebrities gather. The barbequed meats are especially recommended. For the excellence of Russian cuisine, the Yar Restaurant, is an ultra smart suggestion. • SHAKESPEARE'S "Henry the Fifth," seems to be causing quite a furor among movie goers. It's Laurence . Olivier in his magnifi- cent Technicolor production. Before the picture was com- pleted, the Olivier production cost well over two million dollars. It is now at the Cinema in Detroit. • IT'S JEANNE ROSENTHAL and Artie Fishman who'll make their sometime-soon merger le- gal-tight with the formal an- nouncement of their engage- ment ... Artie and Jeanne both graduated from Central Hi and have been making eyes at each other since they were in the tenth grade together .. There'll be open house at the bride's-to- be home on the 22nd. • SWEET OF VOICE and sweet of face, Jeri Sullavan, singing star of the Jimmy Durante-Garry Moore radio show, tops a complete new Bowery show this week. Always inclu- ded in her re- pertoire is the 01 d i e, "Melan, choly Baby ," which she sings in an inimitable style. The support- ing show is tal- ent-packed, with Woods d; Bray Woods and Bray, famous ballroom and adagio dance team in a featured spot.
