Italy Agrees to Admit

Asserting that the political alt.

the reconstruction program there,
Charles J. Rosenbloom, national

tine, predicted that the rate of
Jewish Immigration would in.
crease as a result of the pressure
of European Jews seeking a home,
Rosenbloom toured every sec-
tion of Palestine and made a dr.
tailed study of the economic,
agricultural and cultural progress
that has been made in the Home-
land with the aid of the United
Palestine Appeal.
He emphasized that "the Jew.
ish community of Palestine per.
haps more keenly than any other
Jewish community in the world
feels the urgency of the Jewish
problem in Europe and is deter.
mined at the risk of its own se.
curity and happiness to make
possible the settlement there of
the largest possible number of
survivors of the death chambers
of the Nazis."
Describing the scenes of misery
he witnessed on refugee ships in
the Haifa harbor, Rosenbloom
said: "No one who has not seen
the tragic survivors as they reach
out for the shores of Palestine
can comprehend the yearning of
the remnants of European Jewry
to find release from wandering
in the Jewish National Home."
U. S. Attempts to Persuade Rome
to Take Full 25,000 Refugees
WASHINGTON, (JTA) — The Italian government
has offered to accept 10,000 of the 25,000 Jewish ref-
ugees from Austria whom the United States is seeking
to lodge temporarily in Italy, it was learned at the State
Department.
Talks are continuing in Rome in an attempt to
reach an agreement for accept-
ance of the full 25,000 DP's.
Acting Secretary of State Dean
Acheson confirmed that the Itali-
ans had tentatively rejected the
American request. Reasons given
at that time by Italy were lack
of adequate food and facilities to
care for the refugees, although
the American proposal specified
that they be accommodated with-
out cost to Italy.
British pressure has been cited
for Italy's reluctance to take more
displaced persons. Britain fears
the Jews would be closer to Pal-
estine in Italy.
