LONDON (Palcor) -- Martial law rule is making
Palestine unlivable, Jeffery Hoare, News Chronicle cor-

ing that "at the risk of being thrown out of Palestine"
he must say that "the attitude of the military authorities
these days, to every one, NS. ithout exception, is unbear-
ably high handed and dangerous."

University students throughout
the country have contributed more
than $40,000 to date toward the
$100,000,000 goal of the United
Jewish Appeal for Refugees,
Overseas Needs and Palestine.
Of the 30 colleges, universities
and other institutions of higher
learning represented in the stu-
dent drive for the relief, rehabili-
tation and resettlement of Eu-
rope's 1,400,000 homeless Jewish
survivors, 18 are In the country at
large, with 12 schools in Greater
New York.
Outside New York City, the ma-
jority of campus drives were held
under auspices of the Hillel Foun-
dation, student cultural society of
Bnai Brith, which set the pace
for the university drives with a
1946 pledge of $50,000. Opening of
the Fall semester next month is
expected to see a sharp rise in
the total of student contributions.
Michigan a Leader
At the University of Michigan,
the Hillel chapter succeeded in
raising $4,550 to lead the Mid-
west, while at Ohio State Univer-
sity the fund attained $2,700.
Students at the University of
Illinois contributed $2,050, with
students at Harvard, Radcliffe and
MIT raised $1,601.
The drive at the University of
Wisconsin, led by Rabbi Theodore
Gordon of Hillel, attained an even
$1,000, and at Iowa State Univer-
sity students and members of the
faculty contributed $664.
New York College led all other
schools in the country with a
combined student-faculty contribu-
tion of $6,209, as against $1,299
contributed in 1945.
Raise $1,041 at Columbia
Barnard and Columbia teamed
up to raise $1,041 for a virtual
$1,500 increase.
The United Jewish Appeal is the
central fund-raising body for three
great agencies. These are the
Joint Distribution Committee,
which provides relief and reha-
bilitation to destitute Jews over-
seas; the United Palestine Ap-
peal, which provides for the mass
settlement and upbuilding of the
Jewish homeland in Palestine; and
the National Refugee Service
(United Service for New Ameri-
cans), which provides for the so-
cial adjustment of refugee-immi-
grants in the United States.

Love of the Soil — Nowhere is the love of the soil
greater than in Palestine, where new settlers coming
from European devastation cherish and care for
every inch of ground. Here a pioneer is irrigating
young banana trees in the Valley of Beth Shan. The
campaign of the United Jewish Appeal will make it
possible for many thousands of other refugees to set-
tle on the land of the Jewish National Home in 1948.
