Rejection of Efforts to Enlarge Detroit Gas
Supply Rebounds Upon Mich. Consolidated

In February, 1945, during hear-
ings In the Detroit city hall,
Councilman Gus Dorais sought to
obtain expressions of mutual
readiness to open negotiations, in
order to avert the gas shortage
which has since occurred. Turn-
ing to the Panhandle Eastern
chairman, W. G. Maguire, he
asked:
"Is there any possibility of
reaching such an agreement from
your side?"
Mr. Maguire replied, "Certainly,
yes."
When discussion followed on
the advisability of awaiting a
court decision then pending oa
pipe line rates affecting Detroit,
a spokesman for Michigan Con-
, 'solidated turned aside the city's
efforts at mediation. He was the
company's counsel, Henry Mont-

Wardrop to Appear

The "opportunity" mentioned by
Mr. Montgomery was World War
II, and the need for more gas in
the middle west. But the' federal
authorities refused to permit
Michigan Consolidated to receive
enough steel pipe for its project.
But Mr. Montgomery's attitude
found a recent parallel at Wash-
ington, D. C., during hearings by
the Federal Power Commission.
Henry Fink, Michigan Consoli-
dated's executive vice-president,
was the witness under examina-
tion.
Confronted with a Panhandle
Eastern advertisement of May 2,
1946, expressing anew the readi-
ness of Panhandle Eastern to ne-
gotiate for the sale of more nat-
ural gas at Detroit, he contra.
dicted himself when asked
whether any proposal had subse-
quently been received from Pan-
handle. Mr. Fink had answered.
"No." This question was then
asked by a Panhandle Eastern
attorney:
"You did know, did you not,
that in the proceedings under
Panhandle's 'A' application, its
general counsel stated it was
ready to amend its contract to
give you your pro rata part of
the additional gas provided for
in that proceeding . . . you knew
that statement had been made in
open commission hearing, did you
not?"
Mr. Fink: "That is right."
Further objections by Michigan
Consolidated attorneys were over.
ruled by the commission exam-
iner. Mr. Fink was then asked
if he did not know that, in other
proceedings before the Com s-
sion subsequent to May 2, P n-
handle Eastern had offered to
increase its sales of natural gas
to Michigan Consolidated by an
additional 25 million cubic feet
daily. Mr. Fink's answer was:
"I am familiar with that provi-
sion, yes."

Zionist Council
Starts Campaign
For Revenues

PAGEL'S, Inc.

The Zionist Council of Detroit
was created in Detroit in 1936 for
the purpose of coordinating Zion-
ist work in the city of Detroit.
All Zionist parties, General Zion-
ist, Hadassah, Poale Zion and the
Mizrachi, are members of the
Zionist Council.

Since England closed the doors
of Palestine to additional Jews
coming into the country, the Zi-
onist Council has been carrying
on this work of propaganda
among Jews and non-Jews. It has
asked President Truman to use
his office to protect the Jewish
rights in Palestine and try to in-
duce England to live up to its
obligations to the Jewish people.
Lately mass meetings of pro-
test demonstrations have been
called, and the Zionist Council
now finds itself without funds to
carry on its work.
Detroit Jewry, active Zionists
and Jews who are not members
of the Zionist parties, are being
asked to help financially. A cam-
paign of $60,000 has been started,
and contributions can be made to
the Zionist Council, 1044 Penob-
scot Bldg., Detroit 26.
