The Cosmopolitan make up of
America since its early frontier
days, is significantly scattered with
thousands of monuments through.
out the length and breadth of the
country. These monuments in
stone and tablet, in churches,
schools, synagogues, club rooms,
social halls, parks, streets, etc.,
arc silent testimonials of men and
women of all races and creeds
who gave their last full ounce of
devotion to help preserve the
"American Way of Life."
Veteran organizations of all wars,
including the Revolution, Civil,
Spanish American, World War I
and now World War II, have
unitedly felt the need for a con-
tinuous memorial as a token of
respect for departed comrades.
The proof of the patriotism of the
Jews in America is pointedly
shown by the large number of
monuments to Jews, who paid the
Supreme Sacrifice in the defense
of the United States since the
early days of American develop-
ment.
Many veteran posts are named
after heroes and the Jewish War
Veterans Organization is no ex-
ception to the rule. The members
of these various posts have sol-
emnly pledged to carry on where
their departed comrades left off.
In the Detroit area alone we have
a number of Detroit Jewish Vet-
eran posts named after Detroit
heroes, who paid the Supreme Sac-
rifice in helping the United States
become the victor in World War
II. The following Jewish War Vet-
eran posts have been named for
Jewish war heroes of Detroit of
World War II, namely:
Sgt. Morton Silverman Post, Lt.
Raymond Zussman Post, Lt. Ray-
mond Bloch Post, Lt. Jack Wino-
kur Post, Pvt. Robert Rafelson
Post, PFC. Joseph L. Bale Post,
and five additional heroes will be
memorialized by having posts
named for them, namely: Lt. Sher-
wood Racey Posts, Lt. Roy F.
Green Post, Pvt. Ginsburg-Rosen-
burg Post, Pvt. Sol Yetz-Morris
Cohen Post, Pvt. Charles & Aaron
(Cogan Post. This last group, of
five posts will be installed early
this fall.

gross of the United States in nam-
ing a battleship for Commodore
Uriah P. Levi who was one of our
naval heroes of the early nine-
teenth century.
In Detroit a movement is on foot
for memorializing the names of
some twenty veteran heroes by
naming streets and parks after
them. The Department of Michi-
gan is making an attempt to have
some of the Jewish veteran heroes
ikewise memorialized.

tion with the JWB, throws more
light on the exploits of Jewish
servicemen and women in World
War II. Presented on the eve of
V-J Day, the article tells us that
the:
First to raise the American flag
on pre-war Japanese territory was
Col. Melvin Krulewitch, of New
York.
First American assault boat to
hit the shore of France on D-Day
was commanded by Lt. Abe Con-
diotti, of Brooklyn.
First member of the WAVES to
be killed in line of duty was Eli-
zabeth Korensky, of Philadelphia.
First American killed in action
on North American continent was
Pvt. Joseph Sharp, of Philly, who
died at Dutch Harbor.
First American to kill a Jap in
land action in the Burma cam-
paign was Cpl. Werner Katz, of
New York, a former refugee,
First American Red Cross nurse
killed in World War II was Es-
ther Richards, of Frisco.
First American Army nurse
killed on western front was Lt.
Frances Stanger, of Boston,
First WAC to die in line of
duty was Pvt. Lillian Wall, of
Girardville, Pa.
First American soldier to ac-
cept the surrender of a German
general was Lt. Albert Klein, of
Waukegan, Ill.
And ironically enough, the first
penetration into German soli was
led by a Jewish general, Maurice
Rose, commander of the Third
Armored Division.
