have nothing like Haganah.

ONE YEAR AGO YESTERDAY
(Aug. 8) the S. S. John Ericsson
pulled into New
York harbor
with this writer
and about 7,000
other happy
GIs. When we
finally hit Camp
Shanks, our joy
was augmented
with news that
a new, devas•
Beckman Wing weapon,
the atomic bomb, had been un-
leashed on Hiroshima. "Perhaps
we wouldn't have to go to the
Pacific after all."
And. so I was reunited with my
family and friends after 16 lonely
months. Three days later, the
radio shouted, the newspapers
screamed that the war was over
. . . I celebrated . . . and how!
All were not happy, however.
Billy Doane's dad was not happy.
His hair had turned white since
I last saw him. He told me, one
of his son's best friends, how Bill
was lost in an airborne operation
over Holland. His account was
second-hand, given to him by
Bill's army buddy. To this day,
there is no white cross marking
the grave of Pfc. William Doane.
His body was never found.
The lady next door said, "All
can not be happy." Her son, a
boy of 18, was also "killed in ac-
tion."

" . .
the Arabs have a shortage of
trained military leaders. Haganah
has had the benefit of instruction
from at least one master of guer-
illa tactics, the late Maj. Gen.
Orde C. Wingate, who organized
Jewish patrols during the Arab
uprising to protect British prop-
erty and installations.

"The ranks of Haganah un-
doubtedly have been reinforced
lately with men discharged from
the Jewish brigade of the British
Army and from hundreds of ex-
perienced fighters from Allied
armies and the European under-
ground who have been coming to
Palestine among the illegal Immi-
grants."
