Charge British Were Told
About Bombing In Advdnce

New light was thrown today on the bombing of the
King David Hotel in Jerusalem in a charge that Sir John
Shaw, Chief-Secretary of the Palestine Government re-
fused to allow personnel to leave the hotel •after having

been warned of the impending
bombing, and that the great loss
of life which ensued was due to
his action.
The story was told by Elise
Wirz, champion woman swimmer
of Palestine and a schoolteacher
in Haifa, to the Jewish Morning
Journal upon her arrival in the
United States on Wednesday.
Miss Wirz, who was in Jeru-
salem at fhe time of the bombing,
reported that, contrary to the im-
pression given by the British cen-
sorship, Sir John Shaw was warn-
ed by a telephone operator who
carried the warning message to
him personally. After the first
warning bomb exploded in front
of the building, according to Miss
Wirz, Sir John ordered the guard
to prevent everyone from leaving
the building. The switchboard op-
erator of the Hotel, which houses
the British military headquarters
for Palestine, herself refused to
obey Sir John's order to return to
work, and left the building in time
to save her own life.
This is the story told by Miss
Wirz as it appeared on the third
page of the Jewish Morning Jour-
nal of Thursday, August 1st:
"The telephone operator of the
building received the warning
message some time before the
explosion. She immediately went
to Sir John and told him about
its contents. Shaw, however,
pooh-poohed the whole thing,
declaring that there was noth-
ing to it and that the work
should go on without fear.
"Then came the second warn-
ing, followed by the small pre-
liminary explosions at the en-
trance of the King David Hotel.
"The people in the hotel be-
gan running out of the build-
ing. Sir John, however, issued
strict orders to the military to
shut oft the building and to pre-
vent anyone from coming in or
going out.
"This was the worst thing that
he could have done. Had the
people been allowed to get out,
many would have been saved.
"All Jerusalem now knows the
facts but the government is
withholding them.
"It is noteworthy that the
Jewish telephone operator who
received the message did not
obey Shaw but left the building
and saved her own life. Another
telephone operator, Miss Russo.
remained at the switchboard and
was killed."

Atlee Holds Session
On Truman Rebuff

LONDON (JTA)—Prime Minis-
ter Attlee paid a flying visit to
London this week to participate in
a meeting of the cabinet, which
was hurriedly summoned, report-
edly to discuss the Palestine issue
and the unfavorable reception by
President Truman of the "federal-
ization" plan. The members of the
cabinet are reported to have been
stunned by the statement Issued
in Washington by the President.
It is considered probable in Lon-
don, Reuters reports, that Truman
will reject the plan, killing the
scheme permanently. "Political
observers in London regard the
President's reported position as
the most severe blow yet struck
at Britain's present Palestine pol-
icy, seeing that Britain accepted
the partition of the Holy Land as
a basis for discussion on the con-
dition that it would be accepted
by the United States government,"
Reuters said.

Gen. McNarney
Invites Goldmann,
Wise to Talks

FRANKFURT (JTA)—Gen. Jo-
seph T. McNarney, commander of
United States forces in the Eu-
ropean theater, has invited Drs.
Stephen S. Wise and Nahum Gold-
mann, American members of the
Jewish Agency, to confer with
him, it was learned here.
Drs. Wise and Goldmann have
requested that the invitation be
held open until next week-end be-
cause they will be engaged until
then at the Paris meeting of the
Jewish Agency executive and world
Zionist leaders. It is expected that
they will discuss all aspects of the
Jewish problem with Gen. McNar-
ney.
The Jewish Central Committee
in Munich has accepted Gen. Mc.
Narney's offer, granting it legal
status. Formal recognition will
enable the committee to cooper-
ate with such official bodies as
UNRRA and the various voluntary
relief agencies operating in Ger-
many. It will also give the com-
mittee the right to initiate con
sultatlons with military authorities
on any Jewish problem.

and study, but above all they want
to be together.
They also want to have with
them Meyer, age 19. Meyer is a
native of Germany, son of a pros.
porous middle-class family, with a
strong interest in art. His entire
family—mother, father, two bro-
thers—were killed In the Treblin-
ka gas chambers in 1942. He met
the other three youngsters after
the Allied victory, and "clicked"
at once.
The similarity of their person-
alities and the common tragic
memories makes them all wish to
live together.

The tragedy of European Jewry
comes closer to Detroiters as sur-
vivors of death camps begin to
arrive here. The latest is a group
of four young people: two broth-
ers, a sister and their friend who
arrived on the Marine Flasher on
July 15. Their story is "common-
place" by now, yet full of poign-
ancy and horror.
Three' of the young people come
from Lodz, Poland. They are La-
zar, 23; Jacob, 19, and Rachel, 17.
Their father owned a bakery and
both boys were taught this trade.
The older one was also a student
of languages and a writer. Then
came the war and Hitler. The
mother, father and a younger son
were killed. The three children
were sent to different concentra-
tion camps. Lazar slaved in the
coal mines subsisting on bread
and watery soup. He lost 50
pounds • during this period. Jacob,
blond and blue-eyed, escaped from
camp when he was about to be
gassed and still bears the scars
on his face caused by a bullet
sent to intercept him. Rachel was
10 when she was taken to Ausch-
witz, where she witnessed her
mother's death in a crematorium.
"I've learned a lot during these
years," she says, with tears In
her eyes.
After their liberation the chil-
dren were reunited through the
efforts of the Joint Distribution
Committee. They came to the
