Agree Memorial Society to
Hold 5 Day Family Reunton

Rabbi Theodore Freedman, spir-
itual leader of the congregation
at Elmhurst, Long Island, was
the principal speaker at a dinner
Friday, Aug. 9, at the Hotel De-
troiter, which was part of a five-
day program taking place in De-
troit in connection with a family
reunion of the Isaac Agree Me-
morial Society. The reunion also
marked the silver jubilee of the
society which was formed twenty-
five years ago on the third day of
Chanukah in 1921.
The purpose of the reunion is
to perpetuate the bonds that link
the family together and at the
same time to maintain the works
which Isaac Agree initiated in the
fields of Jewish religious, educa-
tional and philanthropic activity.
Rabbi Freedman, who is a mem-
ber of the family, is a graduate
of the Jewish Theological Semi-
nary of America and has spoken

Little Lady From Liverpool
Has Reunion With Family

Reunited with her family, some
of whom she has not seen for
forty years, Mrs. Miriam Kravitz,
who came to Detroit in July, finds
this country vastly different from
Liverpool, England, which has
been her home .since 1888.
"I was in Liverpool all through
the Blitz," she said. "I lived in
the area which was under con-
tinual bombing. My own home
was never struck, although all
the windows were broken from
the concussion, but the homes all
around mine were almost corn.
pletely destroyed.
"We had an air raid shelter in
our back yard. It was of brick
and was camouflaged as a vege-
table garden. When my grand-
daughter was born, we used to
take her out in a crib to the air
raid shelter all the time. She was
a regular blitz baby. When she
was born, the hospital was bonTh-
ed twice."'
Mrs. Kravitz is meeting most
of her family for the first time in
so many years that she hardly
recognizes anyone. Her brother
came here from Philadelphia and
this is the first time in forty
years that she has seen him. It
is thirty-live years since she has
seen her sister. It is twenty years
since she has seen her two daugh-
ters, Mrs. Milton Rogers, 11735
Broad Street, and Mrs. Jack
Feinstein, 237 Grove St., High-
land Park, with whom she has
been making her residence here.
She also has three sisters.
"Conditions in England are far
different than they are here," she
said. "There is not much oppor-
tunity there. Almost everyone
would like to leave and go to
other countries. It is very diffi-
cult, however, to get out of that
land.
"Food rationing Is still on in
full sway. In fact, restrictions on
food are worse now than they
were during the war. We were al-

lowed one half pound of sugar
per person per week, two ounces
of butter per person per week,
one half pint of milk a day. Th e
milk ration will go down this
.winter. We get two ounces of
bread per person per day where,
a loaf of bread weighs two
pounds. Clothing is also rationed
even to socks and handkerchiefs,
"Life in England today is very
hard. The housing problem is ter.
rible. Many of the houses were
destroyed in the bombing and
very little building has been go-
ing on."

"There is a great Gem of anti.
Semitism in England. The old,
vaunted freedom of speech is no
more. The soap box oratory that
used to go on in Hyde Park is a
thing of the past. So is the old
freedom of speech. The poirce are
far too active."
This is Mrs. Kravitz' first visit
to this country. Her visa expires
In January and although she can
renew it for another year, she
plans to return to meet her son
who will be discharged from ser-
vice in India at that time.
She thinks Detroit is beautiful
and is having the time of her
life here.
