With Sally Fields
Some bright tomorrow I'll wake
up with nothing troubling my
mind, after a good nite's sound
sleep. I'll look forward to a day
that will be free from all cares,
when I won't have to rush here
and there and
where there'll
be no phones
ringing, no
doors slam-
ming, no dogs
barking, no
linotypes
poun ding, no
machines hum-
ming, no duty
Sally Fields calls to make,
no obligations of any kind, in fact
just no nothing...You know the
kind of a day when you can do
as you please or just don't do a
thing...The kind of a day every.
one always thinks about but so
rarely does anything about. That
long-hoped for day—It's a specu-
lative trend of thought I have
had for at least the past 25 years.
"Und ich habe mayre oz meshiach
vet kummen biz ich vel des de-
leben." Oh, well, I can dream,
can't I?
•
"To gild refined gold, to paint the
lily,
To throw a perfume on the violet,
To smooth ice, or add another hue
Unto the rainbow, or with taper
light
To seek the beautious eye of the
heavens to garnish
Is wasteful and ridiculous excess."
As asinine as attempting any of
the above, that's how asinine it is
for me to indulge in the wishful
thinking of a day devoid of any-
thing to worry me...Were I to
suddenly find myself with such a
day on my hands I'd in all prob-
ability worry about what to do
with it...Porgive me, dear God.
I was only fooling. "Men for
takke nit zindigen."

. If you haven't as yet heard Lee
Simpkins, the dark-hued boy sing
Ell-Ell at the Bowery and in true
Hebrew, you better do so at
once. His gol-
den tones as he
sings that age-
old classic
simply goes
thru you. You
can feel the
heart-throbs of
a People flow
thru the plain-
tiveness of his
voice . . With
one of the most
magnificent voices ever' heard in
Detroit, golden voiced tenor Ar-
thur Lee Simpkins continued to
hold Bowery audiences breath-
lessly spellbound. His unusual
versatility, perfect stage presence
and engaging personality combine
to make him a sure-fire attrac-
tion. When one says "He's sensa-
.
tional" about Arthur Simpkins,
it's not just a phrase—it's a fact!
In support of Arthur Lee Simp-
kins is a cast of fine acts, includ-
ing Pierce and Roland, clever
ballroom dance team; Phil Mara.
quin, new comedy find who is a
dancer, unicyclist and magician;
handsome baritone Don Harmon;
lovely songstress Lillian James;
the Jumpin' Jivers, and many
others. The Aurora Roche-Carlyle
Dance Group features beautifully
costumed exotic productions, such
as "Hindu in Swing," and "Dance
Barbaro." Comedian Bert Nolan,
who is replacing master of cere-
monies Frankie Rapp while he's
on vacation, offers, in his own
spot, such zany bits as "Yakimo,
the Punchy Squaw," "Turkish De-
light," and "The Drunk." Hand-
some Ben Young and his orches.
tra provide music for the shows
and continues to fascinate the
dancing fans. Sunday nite will be
your last chance to hear Arthur
Simpkins.

Affairs, too, are starting for
Betsy Weinberg since her engage.
ment to Dr. Stolar• has been made
known. A get-to-gether dinner
for "mechutanim" of both sides
scheduled for Friday Nite at the
Weinbergs for which sisters Lil
(Mrs. Abe Levine, Chicago) and
Fritzie (Mrs. Sam Siegel Sagi-
naw) are coming in and oh,
so many more simply lovely
plans...well, here's luck kids,
may it all be good...Excitement
ran rampart, too, the other nite
while out with a flock of kids
when Estelle Katler suddenly
flashed her left hand in the gals'
faces. They were dazzled by the
brilliance of the ring on her third
finger—Estelle and Sandy Fffik
have decided to aisle it someday.

And the Mickey Woolfs are cel-
ebrating their offspring's birthday,
Leonard R., who weighed almost
nine pounds at birth "Ken ein

27th. Mrs. Mickey was Evelyn
Schwartz in her baby days...Mr.
Mickey is the celebrated maestro,
you know.

You remember, of course, that
Devlin has a delightful little priv-
ate dining room that so very nice-
ly can accommodate as many as
thirty people...And you can have
your own little private bar up
there, too. It's really an ideal
spot for a, not too big, party or
celebration of any kind...And
with George Econ dishing out the
food your entertainment worries
are over...Just pick your guest of
honor and leave it to George.

Birdie Blackman (Mrs. Harry)
who has been sojourning in Cin.
cinnati these past few years is
rounding out her vacation with a
visit to the old home town aftet
galavantin' from coast to coast.
Incidentally, son Bob, that very
handsome individual recently mar-
ried a very lovely damsel in New
York City...Son Ralpn is back
home from service and he and
Pal Buddy Kane can be seen
squiring Detroit's loveliest...Bir-
die looks marvelous. ("Pooh, pooh,
pooh, ken ein hore nit.")

Had dinner at Berman's 'tother
day. Ran into a flock of old
frlends...Loolcs like ye old gang
still favors that Times Square
Spot as its most freuented ren-
dezvous . . Saw Ben Gottlieb
("Cheese" we used to call him in
our kid days) and it recalled to
my mind his courtin' days with
Ann Finkelstein — now the Mrs.
herself — and the last time I
ran into her, which wasn't too
long ago. Ann didn't look much
older than in those good old days.

Morris Fishman and M. E.
O'Brien, divisional director of the
State of Mich. for the Franklin
Life Insurance Co. are back home
again after attending the first
National convention the company
held since 1941. (Remember, there
was a war on? No conventions.)
The big doings were held way up
in the Rocky Mountains at the
Stanley Hotel at Espes Park, Col.
orado.

And from St. Lbuis comes word
from the Phil Sabins with a love-

Betty and son Larry are very

happy being with Pop in a cozy
little apartment where they can
enjoy being together and partak-
ing home-cooked meals and above
all' keeping an eye on the "old
man." Phil, you know, was at the
Stotler with Mort Dennis' aggro-
gation of music makers for such
a long time. He's the cute little
guy with the big drums and a
trunk full of New York corny
jokes...They're at the Stotler in
St. Louie, too.

A very demure and very comely
little miss came into my office
"yestiday" a n d
very proudly
informed me
that she sang
on several oc-
casions at Bnal
Brith (only she

tions and at
the Temple
Beth El, that
she knows
quite a few Jewish songs like
"Yiddish° Mamma," "Wie
Blum" and others...She's a little
Austrian-Hungarian miss with a
very lovely soprano voice and
chuck full of dreams and ambi-
tions who's making her debut in
"opera" via the G-I Opera Co.'.
offering "Poco Poco", which
opens at the Shubert-Lafayette
Sunday, Aug. 4, for one week
only. From all indications it
promises• to be worth attending
and hearing. There'll be a 30-piece
