President Roosevelt Brigade
the training ground for the Fascist forces
of Germany and Italy, an American group
of soldiers volunteered in the cause of
liberty and sailed to Spain to fight Franco.
That group of soldiers was called the
Abraham Lincoln Brigade and had so
many Jewish members that it was said
that in spite of all the languages spoken
there, anyone could get along perfectly
well if he spoke Yiddish.
There is need now for another such
group of soldiers to fight in defense of
liberty. It could also be composed largely
of Jewish volunteers for the site of its ac-
tions would be Palestine.
A fitting name for such a brigade would
be the President Roosevelt Brigade after
the name of the great American president
who was so friendly to all oppressed mi-
norities.
On all sides, such a brigade is being'
discussed. The idea was first put into cir-
culation at the 37th annual convention
of the national organization of Bnai Zion.
Should there be an appeal for such a
brigade, volunteers would enthusiastically
spring forth in the thousands from many
former GI's, especially those who were sta-
tioned in Palestine or had spent their fur-
loughs there. Many thousands of others
would doubtless respond because they saw
what anti-Semitism had done to the Jews
of Europe. People who saw what took
place in Europe do not need any propa-
ganda to make them believe that Pales-
arrows of reactionary forces who could
point to his foreign birth as proof that
what he stood for and what he fought for
was not in harmony with the traditions of
American democracy. Yet, defying them
all, Hillman did not abandon his life's
mission in order to escape the attacks
against him as the Lithuanian-born son of
a rabbi, but bravely and quietly went on
with his efforts to make America a better
place to live in for the under-privileged
masses. As President of the Amalgamated
Clothing Workers Union, as head of the
CIO Political Action Committee, as a
leader in the war effort under President
Franklin D. Roosevelt, Hillman gave of
his utmost to the cause of true democracy
among men, whether in industrial or in
political relations, unmindful of the effect
such devotion might have upon his per-
sonal popularity in certain circles, or even
upon his health.
His death at the untimely age of 59
robs America and Jewry of a great hu-
manitarian and an outstanding statesman
in the field of labor-management rela-
tions, as President Truman has called him.
He will be hard to replace. But as we
mourn his passing, let us at least be grate-
ful that such a noble leader, whom Lithu-
anian Jewry—now alas no more—had
given to America, had lived and managed
to accomplish the many fine things on be-
half of his fellow-men which he did ac-
complish.
