With Sally Fields
The Highspot of interest this
past week was the Bnai Brith 78th
Annual Convention of the DGL6 . .
The heat of enthusiasm displayed
by both the Men's and the Wo-
mens' groups ' very adequately
matched the heat of the days dur-
ing this 5-day gathering (July
6-11) . . . Much business was ac-
complished, many resolutions were
presented and adopted.
•
However, it was not all work for
evidently the committee in charge
were firm believers in the old
adage all work and no play, etc."
And so, there were luncheons, pil-
grimages to Greenfield Village and
other points of interest, shopping
tours, a reception with music for
dancing and even a "Cabaret
Nite" . . . and what a caBaret
nite! Mamma mia!—a show that
put the Bowery to shame for its
continuous performance . . For
two solid hours the audience wit-
nessed every type of an act from
an acrobatic dancer, a ventrilo-
quist, a marionette show, a musi-
cal comedy team, an Irish tenor,
a zany pianist to the Queen of
the nite clubs herself, Nan Black-
stone in a special repertoire of her
special brand of song.
•
Attended a press conference
early Wed. morning after 2 hours
sleep, when Earl G. Harrison gave
the press an inkling of what his
message would be that nite .. I
learned more about the British
and Palestine issue during that
short session than I'll over learn
again, I'm sure . . No wonder!
What with the propensity of the
representatives of the dailies, the
Associated Press, the United Press
and the International News Serv-
ice to ask questions and the com-
bined abilities of Dean Harrison,
Henry Monsky, Maurice Bisgyer
and Isaac Franck to answer them
—it was a liberal education in
vital current events . .
•
Here's an event that pleased me
no end—the award of the silver
medal by the United States treas-
ury .department to genial hard-
working, accomplishing, Ben Z.
Glass, executive secy. of the Men's
DGL6 for his zealousness and loyal
efforts in behalf of the various
Victory and War Loan Drives.
other ]audible comments of Mr.
Monsky when he said, in effect
that Yudkoff was a sweet guy. (I
guess guy, tho, wasn't the word he
used) . . Harry is a sweet guy!
He hands out criticisms sugar-
coated and if you don't like it,
you like it anyway, just because
he is so sweet—and he gives out
a deserving compliment, unstint-
ingly.
•
I mustn't forget to comment on
how lovely Charlotte Gant, secy.
to the exec. secy., looked at all
times during the sessions and thru
the social activities—Always de-
mure, but very capable and serious
during busines procedure and very
charming, seductive and gay dur-
ing playtime.
•
Let's see, suppose we go back to
the beginning of the convention . .
The DSR bilges loaded on a bevy
of lovely gals and equally as
charming beau brummels at the
depot Sat. nite who arrived on the
Special B B train from Chicago. .
Everything went off smoothly un-
der the capable direction of Sid
Karabal and Max Goldhoff and
their greeting committee . . You
should have seen his darling wife,
Sarah Goldhoff, God Love her, as
she stood there holding the huge
Welcome BB Delegates sign. Now
there's really a gal for you .. She
has done so much for BB without
being heralded or publicly lauded
for her efforts . . By the way,
can she bowl . . Mammma mia!
That must account for that girl-
ish figure, eh, Sarah?
•
The reception Sat. nite at the
Book with Bob Ruth's band doing
the dancing honors .. Max Sossin
headed the entertainment .. Nu1T
sod! By the way those who've had
pictures taken step forward if you
haven't received yours . . I saw
some and they're honeys.

Sunday Nite. Lou Harrison, new
1st V. P. took the chair that nite
and being chairman of the mem-
befship during the past year and
knowing what a swell job he did
and imbued with the ideas and ex-
perience to do even a greater one
this coming year and so wanting
(despite the fact that he worked
so hard and saying so) that job
again this year couldn't "help
doing a bit of campaigning" be-
fore so great and big an audience".
There were two highlights at this
session—the tableau, institution
and initiation of the Downtown
Lodge of which Mannle Cornfield
is president by the Degree team
of the Shofar Lodge of Milwaukee.
With the background music of Eli,
Ell and Kol Nidre, the symbolic
tableaus depicting Israelitic his-
tory was very effective . . Sam
Gensheroff, the director deserves
much credit for this especially
fine piece of work .. Milwaukee is
extremely fortunate to have him
in their midst .. Dr. Abram Sac-
har's address, "Bnai Brith Hori-
zon's" which he delivered in his
usual interesting manner was one
of the most dynamic talks ever
heard by BB members.
•
Monday Nite's meeting brought
the news that the 1947 convention
would be held in St. Paul (I once
took a trip to St. Paul. T'was dur-
ing the furlough days . . t'was
quite a memorable trip and it's so
indelibly impressed on my mind).
The most interesting bit of in-
It's the .. .
Back Stage Bar
(Next to Avenue Theatre)
Sentinel for their method in han-
dling Bnai Brith News . . I was
particularly flattered by the praise
of the Committee in-as-much as
both the Bnai Brith Highlights
and the Center Spread of the Con-
vention Issue, which received
much acclaim and of which hun-
dreds of copies were taken by
out-of-town members as souvenirs,
were both figments of my poor
brain.

duty is the bringing over of quali-

the students have been them-

recommended at this convention
that BB secure sponsors for this
very laudable project ... The pos-
