Brothers Meet for First Time on
Rescue Ship; Many Others United

A pair of brothers who had
never seen each other before,
and another pair who had been
separated for 30 years, were
among the persons united by the
National Refugee Service, whose
work is financed by the $100,-
000,000 campaign of the United
ewish Appeal for 1946, when the
S "Marine Flasher" arrived in
ew York City last week with its
second shipload of refugees im-
migrating under the Truman di-
rective.
Jack Halpern, of Brooklyn, N.
Y., a retired U. S. Army Sergeant
with 30 years' service for Uncle
Sam to his credit, was brought
together with Dr. Isaac Halpern,
a survivor of Nazi concentration
camps, whom he knew previously
only by correspondence. The
American brother left his native
town of Lodz, Poland, in 1912.
The European brother was born
after his departure. When the
war ended: Jack Halpern heard
through an American chaplain
that Isaac had escaped from con-
centration camp and survived.
Dr. Halpern's wife, Paula, who
also lived through concentration
camp imprisonment, arrived with
him.
The other fraternal reunion was
between Harry Posenitzky, also
of Brooklyn, and his brother
Isaac, a farmer from Poland who
served with the Polish army
early in the war. Harry came to
the United States 30 years ago,
when Isaat was 5 years old. Like
the Halpern brothers, the Posen-
itzkys were unable to recognize
each other, and it was necessary
for NRS workers to bring them
together.
Many other reunions of rela-
tives separated for years by war
and persecution took place when
the "Marine Flasher" docked. The
ship brought 824 passengers, of
whom 230 were repatriated Ameri-
can citizens and the rest were

quota immigrants arriving under
President Truman's directive. NRS
gave its corporate affidavit as the
basis for issuance of visas to 342
of the passengers.
This brought to over 1,900 the
number of persons who have al-
ready been admitted to the Unit-
ed States on visas based on the
NRS corporate affidavit. This in-
cludes immigrants who arrived on
the first three ships from Ger-
many and former residents of the
Oswego shelter. The total num-
ber of newcomers from Europe
under the Truman directive for
whom NRS has provided tempo-
rary shelter and subsistence in the
past four weeks rose to 377.
