armed might of 550,000 men and
women. Leading this mighty con-
tingent are six major generals, 11
brigadier generals, four admirals,
one vice-admiral, two rear-admi-
rals anti a commodore. Then
scatter this assemblage from the
outskirts of Berlin to the heart
of Japan. Therein lies the scope
of the contribution of Americans
of Jewish faith in World War II.
On the home front we find that
thousands of Jewish families gave
three or more
members to the
service. Getting
down to small-
er proportions,
records show
that 19 families
contributed s i x
members each,
13 families fur-
nished seven
members each,
Beckman and four others
contributed eight members each.
Nearly 7,500 Jews are already
known to have died in service.
Six thousand of these were killed
in combat. Authentic records com-
piled by the Jewish Welfare
Board set the total casualty fig.
ures at 23,401.
Lt. Raymond Zussman, of De-
troit, was the only Jewish ser-
viceman in the United States to
win the Congressional Medal of
Honor, the nation's highest mili-
tary decoration. However, 64 men
were recipients of the Distin-
guished Service CeJss, 27 won
Navy Crosses, and 34 were award-
ed Distinguished Service Medals.
An aggregate of 33,446 citations
for valor and merit, many of
them presented posthumously, are
linked with Jewish names.
