The war exacted a terrible toll
in the overall health of the So-

troit office of the American Jew-
ish Congress, it is announced that
the Jewish delegation from Po-
land, headed by Dr. Emil Som-
merstein, will arrive in Detroit on

ment and the director. Of the
seventy-four pianists auditioning
from all over the United States,
only four were accepted, Eleanor
being one of the four. The audi-
tion audience committee consist-
ed of the department head, Ru-
dolph Serkin, M. Horzowski, Mme.
Isabelle Vangarova, and the di-
rector, Efrem Zimbalist. The
committee requested Eleanor to
play a Bach Prelude, an excerpt
from a Beethoven sonata, and an
entire Chopin Impromptu.
Last month, Eleanor gave a
solo recital under management.
In January of this year she ap-
peared twice with the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra as a result
of winning the Tuesday Musicale
piano contest last spring. The re-
mainder of the award was a
check for $100. She has given
many solo recitals and appear-
ances since she began her piano
studies at the age of four with
Rose Morris Saner. For the past
six years she has been a pupil of
Edward Bredshall.

At a double engagement party
held May 19 at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Wolf Wrotslowsky, 3016
Clairmount Ave., $200 was col-
lected by the guests for use in
Jewish relief abroad.
The guests included the Wrot-
slowsky, Gellman, Margolis, Fef-
ferman, Struzner and Zebener
families. They thought that even
the happiest moments of Jewish
life should be marked by the re-
membrance of the suffering of
Jews throughout the world.
The party honored the engage-
ments of Miss Goldie Fefferman,
of Chicago, to Ben Wrotslowsky,
and Miss Betty Zebener, of Mex-
ico City, to Paul Wrotslowsky.

tions in this country and abroad,
chiefly Palestine, which funds are

transmitted directly to the re.
spective institutions. Its object is
two-fold: (1) to render all pos-
sible assistance to the authorized
representatives of the accredited
institutions, and (2) to protect

the Jewish public from fraud and
misrepresentation, by issuing cre-

dentials only to such institutions
whose authenticity has been veri-
fied by thorough investigation. To
insure that all the money collect.

the Vaad Hayeshivoth is put on
every receipt to be issued, and the

receipt not bearing such stamp.
The public can be of further help

Of particular interest to Detroit
businessmen is the Allocation Ser-

convenient to allocate an annual
sum totaling the amount of their
annual contributions to the vari-
ous institutions. This money is dis.
tributed by the Vaad Hayeshivoth
according to the contributor's spe.
cific list, and all receipts are kept
on file.
