Restored Limbs

Dear Editor:
The war is over
yet our brethren overseas are still suffering
from hardships and the discharged veteran is already taking his pith: ,
the "forgotten man."
Almost four years ago, the Ida Hibbard Fund was created because
the need for a morale booster for the veteran amputee was so evident
True Research Laboratories are set up for research In artificial limbs
but the mechanical hand given to the veteran is still as ugly as the
one used in the sixteenth and seventeenth century and just about
as uncomfortable.
In checking with many of the boys, I have found that they hide
them away in closets. But we now have a hand made by Beaver Ed-
wards, renowned sculptor. It is either a cosmetic glove to cover a
mechanical hand or long enough to cover over a stump. He also makes
any type of partial restorations of fingers and the like.
We call this our morale builder because it has such a life-like ap-
pearance. It serves well for any person who in his work is accustomed
to meeting the public. Pecple unconsciously stare at a stump and
make the owner very uncomfortable.
Any veteran of World War Two, boy or girl, is entitled to such a
restoration. Just call any of the agents or Beaver Edwards, 217 Farns-
worth, and an appointment will be made. If a veteran lives out of
Detroit, in any state of the union, the fund has set aside a Travelitv
Fund to pay his transportation by coach to and from his destination
and for meals up to $2.50 a day. If he has to stay overnight, the fund
pays 32.50 for sleeping quarters.
I will be glad to hear from anyone who knows a veteran that
needs a restored limb.

Tyl Ulenspiegl"

A new translation of the famous epic novel Tyl Ulenspiegl ap -

only 30 years after Belgium emerged as an independent state. What 1 , 1 .

to the horrors and injustices of the clergy and of the ruling power.;
during the rule of the terrible Philip the Second in the "low coun-
tries" of Flanders and Holland.
Tyl Ulenspiegl can be compared with Don Quixote, Gyl Blas, Per
Gynt and all the others of the same ilk, whose buffoonery turns into
achievements, and whose frolicsome antics become heroic deeds.
The author collected the thousand legends and farces about Tyl
and organized the vast material into a structure where all the party
represent the characters of the time.
Tyl was the son of a poor peasant in Flanders and from infancy
he roamed over the country seeing and talking and playing prank(
with the enemies of the common people. The author leads the story
in a comparative line of two lives, those of Philip the Second and of
