than 2,000 community leaders at
the dinner in celebration of the
47th anniversary of the National
Jewish Hospital at Denver on
Saturday night. May 18, in the
Grand Ballroom of the Vialdrirf -
Astoria Hotel in New York City,
James A. Fp rley, former Post-
master General of the United
States, praised the pioneer insti-
tution as a vital force helping to
ruard the United States again.;!

Familiar with the work of the
hospital through his many years
of interest as a sponsor. Mr. Far-
ley reaffirmed his admiration for
the healing work which is ren-
dered to people of all races and
creeds without charge. He de-
scribed the National Jewish Hos-
pital's present $2,500,000 building
expansion and maintenance drive
as an important plank In the na-
tion's all-out tuberculosis preven-
tion and control program.
It was pointed out at the din-
ner that the National Jewish
Hospital which was opened in
1899 by Bnai Brith, rendered 76,-
707 days of free medical and sur-
gical care during the past year
to 338 in-patients from 129 com-
munities in 34 States. After an
average residence of 18 months
at the hospital, 7 out of every 10
patients discharged during the
year were improved or recovered
despite the fact that 83 percent
of the patients admitted during
the year were In the advanced
stages of tuberculosis. Outstand-
ing research and rehabilitation
achievements were also reported.

Justice L. Bessman won first
place in the Shaarey Zedek High
School Department's Essay Con-
test, May 15, sponsored by the
Men's Club.
She was also one of the win-
ners in the Essay Contest on
Americanism, sponsored by the
Wayne County Council, Veterans
of Foreign Wars of the United
States.
Justine is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Edward L. Bessman,
3000 Rochester Avenue, and is an
honor student at Central High
School.

Scout Executive Amos Shields,
of the Detroit Area Council, will
be the principal speaker at the
court of honor to be conducted by
Boy Scout Troop 76, of Temple
Beth El, in the Brown Memorial
Chapel on Monday, June 3, at
7:45 p. m.
Rabbi Glazer, of Temple Beth
El, will conduct the invocation.
The scouts will present skits and
songs, and advancement awards
will be made to members of the
troop. Inspector Miles Furlong,
of the Detroit Police Depart-
ment, will speak.
The highlight of this court will
be the presentation of the high-
est Scout award, the Eagle
Badge, to Scouts Thomas Klein.

A new magazine has sprung
Into existence known as "Hence".
The entire personnel connected
with it consists of veterans. It
contains articles of national prom-
inence plus a salty sort of humor
that augurs great success.

Joint commencement exercise%

Rose Sittig Cohen schools will he
held at 2:30 p. m., Sunday, June
2, in the Rose Sittig Cohen audi-
