Emanuel and Seligman Schloss

Twice Pisgah President
Seligman Schloss served twice
as president of Pisgah Lodge Bnai
Brith and as president of Temple
Beth El. In 1903 he contributed to
the United Jewish Charities the
largest gift made by a single in-
dividual in the history of Detroit
Jewry as a memorial to his wife,
which became known as the Han-
nah Schloss Memorial Building,
headquarters of the United Jewisn
Charities. His wife was Hannah
Weichselbaum, daughter of Charles
and Carolina Weiphselbaum, early
residents of Dcoit. She served
as president of the Ladies Society
for the Support of Widows and
Orphans. They were the parents
of Albert, Clara (Mrs. Emanuel
Adler), Murray and Jessy. Their
grandchildren are: Mrs. Lawrence
Lang (Helen Schloss), Frederick
Adler, Helen Adler, Frances Adler
and her twin sister.
Emanuel Schloss died in 1910
SELIGMAN SCHLOSS
and Seligman in 1913.

Bluma Nagler, president of the
National Council of Jewish Jun-
iors, announces that plans have
been completed for the dinner
dance to be given by the organi-
zation on June 1 in the Cham-
pagne Room of the Penobscot
Club.

Rosenwald Post
To Honor Dead

Sponsoring an outdoor inter-
memorial service, members of the
Julius Rosenwald Post 218, Amer-
ican Legion, will honor their
friends and neighbors who were
killed in World War II. The serv-
ice will take place at 2:30 p.m..
Sunday, May 26, at the Central
High School recreation field.
A parade, beginning at 1:45 p.m.,
will precede the services. Army
personnel, Legion veterans of both
wars, Jewish War Veterans, boy
scouts and others will participate.
Gold star families can obtain
reserved seats by calling Joseph

Annual confirmation services of Temple Beth El will be
held on Sunday, June 2, and at Temple Israel Tuesday evening,
June 4.
Traditional announcements of receptions at home will ap-
pear in the next two issues of the Detroit Jewish Chronicle
on May 24 and May 31.
Parents of Confirmants are urged to send their notices for
insertion in these two issues as soon as possible. There is a
charge of one dollar for each insertion.

Marking the completion of 30
years since its foundation, Yeshi-
vath Beth Yehudah will pay trib-
ute to the memory of the late
Rabbi Yehudah Leib Levin and
other rabbis and laymen who
were instrumental in the organ-
ization of the school, at the an-
nual membership meeting to be
held at 8:30 p. m. Monday, May
20, in the Mogen Abraham Syna-
gogue auditorium, Dexter and
Cortland. Cantor David Katzman,
of Congregation nnai Moshe, will
chant the memorial prayer for
the departed leaders of the Insti-
tution. Eighteen new directors to
serve during the fiscal year be-
ginning June 1, will be elected at
Monday's meeting.
Professor Samuel Levin, head of
the Department of Economics at
Wayne University, will be guest
speaker. The public is invited.

After a lapse of several years
caused by wartime restrictions,
the American Jewish Congress
will convene once again. From
headquarters of the A.J.C., a call
went out summoning American
Jewry to a postwar convention.
It will be held from Wednesday,
May 29, to Sunday, June 2, 1946,
at the Hotel New Yorker in New
York City.
In the official convention call, it
is stated that in addition to the
accredited de;egates, all who "are
not indifferent to the question of
whether or not Israel is to have a
future" are invited to come to this
National Convention of the A.J.C.
and actively participate in shap-
ing a realistic program for the
American Jewish Community.

To Honor Memory
of Sholom Aleichem

The city committee of the
United Yiddish Folk Organiza-
tions is organizing a cultural affair
in memory of the great Jewish
writer and humorist, Sholom
Aleichem, whose 30th memorial
anniversary, was marked with
an appropriate program last Sun.
day evening, May 12, in the
Brown Memorial Chapel of Tem-
ple Beth El.
Sunday's program had included
the Yiddish Folk Chorus, con-
ducted by Mr. Henry Goldberg,
and stage artists Chaim Briss•
man, Emilia Babad and Shlamis
Newman, who presented t it r e e
plays by Sholom Aleichem. Speak-
er of the evening was Menashe
Unger, of the Jewish daily paper,
"The Day".

Emanuel and Seligman Schloss were born in Kleinsteinach, Ba-
varia, the former in 1823 and the latter in 1830. They both came to
this country in 1840 and became
residents of Detroit in 1851. They
engaged in the retail trade and in
1853 in the wholesale dry goods
business. Their jobbing trade was
extended into men's clothing man-
ufacturing for which the Lake Su-
perior mining country offered a
commanding outlet in the early
days.
Emanuel Schloss served as the
president of Temple Beth El. He
was married to Rebecca Cozzens,
daughter of Isaac and Sophie
Cozzens, in whose home Temple
Beth El was organized. Their
children were: Moses, Pauline
(Mrs. Louis Strassburger), Flora
(Mrs. Albert Adler,) and Emma
(Mrs. Henry Fechheimer). Mrs.
Clarence H. Enggass (H elen
Strassburger) is the only grand-
child residing in Detroit. Other
grandchildren were: Mont r ose
Strassburger, Mrs. Herbert Bien-
enstock (Fanny Strassburger), Ar-
