ARTICLE 16

The Mauthausen Concentration Camp Case

At Mauthausen, Austria, the Germans set up a camp for German
political prisoners. As the Nazis conquered, or "liberated" other lands
Jews, Poles. Russians, Czechs and Americans were sent there. It i.
estimated that 1,300,000 people were put to death in this camp. They
died by gas, cremation, starvation, beating, "operations," experimems
and by tortures that only the most barbarous savages could devise.
I have listed 300 perpetrators already. Some of them merely•slap
ped or struck prisoners. Others were directly responsible for the dea.i•
of three and four thousand prisoners all by themselves.
I am continually amazed by the amount of work th , t is beitY-
done to bring these perpetrators to justice. I was the first r
porter to come to Wiesbaden but now there are two of us The ne::'
war crimes case will he reported by civilian employees of the Wet ,
Department.
Pictures of SS Men
While working with Captain Matthews of the Trial Section h-7.'
in Wiesbaden, I was shown the pictures of many of the most brute'
SS men here. Some had murdered hundreds and others had murdered
thousands.
They all looked peaceful enough. Just ordinary people, if you
judge from the photographs. They are the kind to whom you would
not give a second glance if you passed them on the street.
One photo was of Commander Zeiries, Commandant of the Mau-
thausen Concentration Camp and his wife. The picture shows them
vacationing, holding up a fish. It is the kind of picture you might find
in the family album of any of your friends, they are both smiling and
look exceptionally friendly.
Yet this Zeiries was responsible for the butchery of more than a
million innocent people. This same man personally supervised the mos
inhuman tortures, all listed here in his record.
Tortured Prisoners
He had one prisoner tied to a stake, stripped to the waist. A ho"
'. ry rat was placed in a bottle with one end open. The hottle we
strapped to the prisoner's stomach. Zeiries stood by and witched tli-
rat gnaw into the victim's intestines and listened with delight to the
dying man's screams.
In his own dying declaration, he was shot when the Americans
liberated the camp, Zeiries denied any guilt of atrocities. He said, "I
did not cause the death of even one person in Mauthausen by rmy
own actions."
Small wonder that these War Crimes Branch men are so deter-
mined! Small wonder that they treat the Germans with as little
softness as they can without being absolutely "cruel." -
In my opinion, Germans in this entire zone are riot being treated
with silk gloves, although they do not get any mailed fist treatment
Contrary to reports you get over there, the American GI's do not
the Germans. Those GI's who were in combat and saw their buddi-s
killed hate the Germans with a deep and burning hatred which they
do not try to hide.
It is true that there is some fraternizing. There are so many young
men and so many young frauleins in the city that in the natural
course of things, there is bound to be some of this,.but in the man
in my opinion, most GI's and more especially their officers are con-
tent to stay by themselves and let the Germans alone.

Acknowledging the Conference's
communications of April 5, in
which Henry Monskv, chairman of
its Interim Committee charged
that the killing of Samuel Dant-
ziger during a German police raid
on a displaced persons center at
Stuttgart demanded more vigorous

James F. Byrnes, Secretary of
State, and Major General 0. P.
Echols, Director, Civil Affairs Di-
vision, of the Weer Department,
gave their assurances that there
would be no relaxation of the de
Nazification program in Germany.
Admitting that anti-Semitism
and other dangerous Nazi doc-
trines still persist . among elements
of the German people, Mr. Byrnes,
in a letter dated April 22, de-
clared that "it would be unfair to
judge the results accomplished so
far without taking into account
the magnitude of the task."
General Echols, writing for S•s-

that all aspects of the Dantziger
incident were being carefully and
thoroughly investigated and called
