tionality"? For too many of our
contemporaries,• Pass6ver and the
Seder is meaningless; to too
many others, it is old-fashioned
and has outlived its usefulness.
Many of us have atfained to a
certain cynicism, which we equate
with the wisdom of age and ma-
turity. We either think of the
past with faint amusement or with
nostalgia, but never see in it a
source of strength and inspira-
tion for the future.
William Bolitho once wrote,
'Giants envy their fathers, only
pigmies their sons." Are we,
then, the pigmies who envy our
sons their assimilation into the
American scene, their discardng of
all Jewish values? Or arc we to
be the giants who envy our fa-
thers, who envy them the Exodus
from Egypt, the Revelation at Mt
Sinai, the forty purifying years
in the desert, the virility of a
newborn and lusty people, the vi-
rility of the conquerors of a land
and the founders of a nation, and
the spiritual virility of those who
gave to the world a new morality
and a new religion?
Some of us in America do envy
nir rebellious sons, our deserting
sons; but some of us, in Pales-
tine, have drawn upon, envy of
)ur fathers as a source of
strength. This envy has given us
the will, the drive to make our-
selves worthy of a new rebirth.
Chose in Palestine are illustrat-
ng the truth of Achad Haam's
contention, that whereas the in-
lividual ages and eventually dies,
:he nation, not physically limited
by the age of any of its compo-
nent parts, can be continually re-
born—if only the will to live is
still there. He saw Palestine in
part as a Spiritual Center which
would radiate inspiration to the
Jews throughout the world—will
we too allow it to Inspire us, to
Ire us with enthusiasm for that
rebirth?
Almost incidentally, William 13o-
litho referred to the Jews as
"those eternal contemporaries who
have seen everything and remem-
bered everything." Only the senile
re m emb e r for remembrance's
sake, the hale remember for what
bat memory can give them, for
he direction and inspiration they
can derive from it. And what he
calls our "muttering nursery
.hyme on world history", the
'Chad Cacho." story, is one of our
mnemonic devices for not forget-
ting.
There is a lot on the credit side
that we may profitably remem-
ber. And there are things on the
!chit side that we dare not for-

story, and we also recall at the
same time all the oppressors of
Israel who met a like fate.
Israel has well been called the
heart of the nations, and its op-
pressors, attacking that heart,
have always weakened the gene-
ral resistance of the world-human
organism to evil and decay. When
we recall these oppressors at the
Seder we invoke God's aid in the
campaign for their eternal subju-
gation. Once upon a time we
opened the door to greet Elijah
the Prophet, how many of us
open it today to see whether we
are not being overheard when we
rise in our righteous wrath and
denounce all the evil-doers and
oppressors of every age and every
nation, the enemies of mankind
itself? Would that the civilized
world and the judges at Nuren-
berg--would hear and take to
heart, when we open the doors
this year and cry out for ven-
geance, vengeance for the six

As refugees in Italy, while themselves hiding from the Nazis,
Louis Kahn, 73, and his wife, Leontine, risked their lives to help 26
American and British prisoners of war escape from a Nazi firing squad.
The National Refugee Service, whose work is supported by the $100,-
000,000 campaign of the United Jewish Appeal for 1946, helped
the Kuhns to immigrate to the United States. They are shown here
telling their story to Ann Fetlock (left), head of the NRS Migration
Department. With them is a relative, Frederick D. Weil, himself a
refugee who gave an affidavit for Mr. and Mrs. Kahn. The Kahns have
settled in San Antonio, Texas.

get. We must remember what our
forefathers accomplished, and see
what we today have already ac-
complished, and what remains un-
done. And we dare not forget that
t was our defection from the Jew-
ish way of life, our treason to
our people and its values (whai
the Rabbis called simply "sin"),
which weakened our national will
to live and made us the prey of
surrounding powers. And we also
dare not forget those who not
only contributed to our downfall,

million new dead and the count-
less martyrs of every generation:

"Pour out thine anger upon the
nations that will have none of
Thee, and upon the kingdoms that
call not upon Thy Name; for they
have devoured Jacob and laid
waste his abode. Pour out Thy
rage upon them, let Thy fury
overtake them. Pursue them with
the breath of Thy fury, and de-
stroy them from under the heav-
ens of the Lord."

And would that the Anglo-
American Commission of Inquiry
on Palestine take heed and open
Palestine to the pitiful remnants
of European Jewry, and liberate
Palestine from British and Colo-
nial troops who seem to have con•
fused the oppressed with the op-
pressor, the victim with the cri-
minal. And then next year would
truly see a Happy Birthday

Jerusalem rebuilt.

but beat us when we were al-
ready down and helpless. The
Rabbis tell us that King Heze-
kiah would have been worthy of
being Messiah, were it not for
the fact that he refused to lead
his people in the rejoicing over
the downfall of the besieging As-
syrian foe, thinking to surpass
even the angels, who had to be
reprimanded for their jubilation
over the drowning Egyptian hosts.
We recall those drowning hosts in
