ESTHER BLUGERMAN Out of the 80,000 Jews who lived in Yugoslavia before the war, only 11,000 remain alive, according to a report received by the Hebrew Sheltering and Immigrant Aid So- ciety (HIAS), from Harry Balt- san, HIAS representative in the Near East, who is visiting the Balkan nations to determine where additional HIAS offices should be established. Of the surviving Jews, approxi- mately 1,000 are former members of the Yugoslavian armed forces who were taken prisoners of war, and the bulk of the remainder consists of young and middle aged Jewish men and women who fled to the mountains during the Nazi invasion and joined the Partisans. While there is some Anti-Semi- tism in Yugoslavia, largely a her- itage of the German occupation, this is exceptional. Jews now have full equality in Yugoslavia. More- over, the Government is actively assisting in the return of property which was confiscated by the Na- zis. Where the original owners are no longer alive, the property is being returned to their relatives in a direct line of descent. In common with the rest of the population, the Jews suffer from the present poor economic situa- American Jewish Congress To Hold Annual Dinner All three groups of the Detroit American Jewish Congress, the Women's Division, the Business and Professional Group and the Detroit Section of the American Jewish Congress will hold their annual dinner on Wednesday, Ap- ril 24, at 7 p.m., at Huyler's in the Fisher Bldg. Dr. Maurice L. Perlzweig rf London, England, eminent Ameri- can and World Jewish Congress leader, will be the guest speaker. His topic will be "The Postwar Situation of the Jews. From the joint office of the De- troit American Jewish Congress, it is announced that this dinner promises to be the outstanding social function of the season. Re- servations must be in not later than April 22. Call Mrs. L. Rosen- zweig, TO. 8-8669. Elizabeth Penfil, chairman of the Committee for Law and Legis- lation of the Detroit Section of the American Jewish Congress, was one of a group of Detroit delegates who attended the "Win the Peace" Conference held in Washington. D.C., on Friday Apr. 5, through Sunday, Apr. 7. At this conference, all matters pertaining to peace, how to win and secure it, were discussed at great length. Cardinal Spellman Contributes $1,000 To UJA Drive Reflecting the deep conviction among Americans of all faiths that rescue of the 1,400,000 Jewish survivors of Europe is the com- mon task of all humanity, Francis Cardinal Spellman this week sent a contribution of $1,000 to the 8100.000.000 campaign of the Unit- ed Jewish Appeal for Refugees, Overseas Needs and Palestine. Acknowledging Cardinal Spell- man's contribution, Edward M. M. Warburg, Chairman of the Greater New York United Jewish Appeal, hailed the participation by Cardi- nal Spellman in the extraordinary $100.000.000 campaign for relief, re- habilitation and resettlement of the surviving Jews of Europe. He stated: "It is heartening indeed at such a time to know that men and women of good will of every faith share our concern over the welfare of the stricken Jews over- seas. who were the first victims of Nazi fury." Histadruth Plaits Silver Jubilee Mordecai Halevi, executive ■ ]. rector of the Histadruth this week announced completion of plans for the Silver Jubilee c(1- ebration of the HADOAR, a puo- lication of the Histadruth Ivrith The HADOAR (The Post) is lb only Hebrew weekly issued in tit Western Hemisphere, and the on. ly Hebrew journal that has ap- peared in this country during long period without interruption. The position of the Jewish community is made somewhat more difficult because of the high degree of government control of business, which has resulted in many former small proprietors being without means to earn a living. Moreover, there is no pro- vision in Government service for such categories as intellectuals, priests and rabbis. As a result, a part of the Jewish community is now dependent on assistance from abroad, which is being supplied by a number of agencies.
