Nazi Documents
In Yivo Archives
NEW YORK — it was announc-
ed recently that some of the Nazi
state documents in the possession
of the Yiddish Scientific Institute.
Yivo, New York, were sent to Nu-
remberg at the request of Justice
Robert H. Jackson, U. S. Chief of
Counsel at the international tri-
bunal in Nuremberg. Copies of
about 100 Nazi documents pertain-
ing to the life and death of the
Jews in the eastern European ter-
ritories under German occupation
were previously sent by the Yivn
to Justice Jackson. Of these, a
number of originals, being held by
the Yivo, was requested to be
used against the Nazi defense now
proceeding at the trial. All these
documents indicate the responsi-
bility of Alfred Rosenberg for the
crimes committed against the Jew-
ish people in the territory under
his control.
Reproductions and English trans-
lations of these and many other
Nazi secret state documents will
appear in a Yivo publication by
Dr. Max Weinreich, entitled "Hit-
ler's Professors: The Part of
Scholarship in Germany's Crimes
Against the Jewish People." The
book will be published on April
25 and will tell of the role of
German scholarship in the anni-
hilation of the Jews in Europe.
Zionist Congress
Must Be Held on
August 7—Shertok
JERUSALEM (JTA)—The Jew
ish Agency executive is deter-
mined that the World Zionist Con-
gress will open on Aug. 7, regard-
less of what decisions concerning
Palestine's future may be issued
in the interim, Moshe Shertolt,
chief of the Agency's political de-
partment, said this week.
Mr. Shertok told the Jewish Tel-
egraphic Agency that he was
greatly surprised at the statement
by Rabbi Meir Berlin, Mizrachi
leader attacking him for alleged-
ly telling the inquiry committee
that the Arabs had as much right
to Palestine y ns the Jews. "I am
unaware that I ever made such a
statement," Shertok said, adding
that Rabbi Berlin had congratii
listed him after he testified before
the committee, and had not voiced
any criticism.

Going into high gear for the actual raising of the two

NEW YORK (JTA) —A nation-
wide survey on anti-Jewish dis-
crimination in employment is now
being conducted by the Nationa'
Community Relations Advisory
Council in cooperation with the
Jewish Occupational Council and
local Jewish groups, it was an-
nounced here.
The survey was undertaken at
the request of the FEPC which
has been instructed to investigate
and report to the President with
respect to discrimination in recon-
version employment.
"Although discrimination against
Jews is known to exist, there is a
virtual absence of objective data
about extent, areas, and patterns
of such discrimination," a state-
ment issued by the NCRAC says
"Jews are not identified either in
the census or on the registration.
forms of the United States Em-
'ployhint Service - and the increas-
ing subtlety with which discrimin-
ation against Jews is carried on
has made it extremely difficult for
the FEPC or other governmental
agencies to take official cogni-
zance of the Jewish aspects of the
problem."
On the basis of the survey, it is
hoped that for the first time a
mass of factual data will be ac-
cumulated concerning the naturo
and extent of anti-Semitic dis-
crimination in employment, and an
indication of the way in which
this discrimination affects different
geographical areas and different
occupation and industrial groups.

Roosevelt, who urged "that every-

basis whereby rectal and religious
intolerance would be no more."
Roosevelt described conditions
in Europe as he had seen them
and called especially•for fair treat=

"had suffered the most and gain-

Go Forward
As he ended his speech with a
stirring, "Go forward! Millions of
people all over the world stand
ready to follow. Go forward, un-
dismayed and unafraid," the entire
audience rose to do him honor.
The next speaker was Edwin I.
Kaufman, former Detroiter and
now business leader of Washing-

his gift of $250,000 to the United

ROME (WNS) — Approximately
1,200 Jews, including three non-
commissioned officers in a Pales-
tine regiment, were arrested this
week at La Spezia, Italian port,
as they planned to embark for
Palestine on three small steamers.
The Jewish refugees, said to
have e n t e red Italy illegally,
reached the port in a caravan of
over thirty Allied trucks. As the
trucks were approaching the port.
an Italian police patrol became
suspicious when it noted two Al-
lied non-commissioned officers in a
jeep. Unable to produce proper
identification papers, the two men
drove off with the police pursuing
them after an exchange of shots.
An investigation disclosed that s
convoy of trucks near-by wets
jammed with Jews waiting to
board three small ships destined
for Palestine.
It is expected that the refugees
will be placed in custody of the
Joint Distribution Committee un-
til final disposition is made of the
incident. Now in custody on the
schooner "Fede," the refugees
were reported to have wired
President Truman and Prime
Minister Attlee that unless they
