First History of Canada's Jews Tells

Doors Still Shut
To Immigrants

By BENJAMIN G. SACK
(Montreal, Canadian Jewish Congress, 1945. $3.00)
Reviewed by CLAYTON GRAY

Quiz any school teacher or
pupil: How many Jews were in
the battles for Canada? Jews?
Were Jews in Canada that long
ago? Well, we are told by the
author that a Jew, Aaron Hart,
served as a lieutenant in the Eng-
lish Army and was responsible
for assembling an entire battalion
to help the British conquer Can-
ada.

Continue the quiz: Henry Jo-
seph virtually founded the Cana-
dian Merchant Marine. But how
about that hardy Jewish pioneer,
Moses Judah Hays, who built the
city's first reservoir and water sys-
tem, and who held the position of
Chief of Police of Montreal for
16 years?

We are told that Jacob Henry
Joseph inaugurated one of our
country's first railways, the Cham-
plain-St. Lawrence line on July
21, 1836; he also helped set up our
first telegraph system and trans-
Atlantic cable.

Mr. Sack tells us that the most
Impressive funeral ever seen in
the city of Three Rivers was ac-
corded by French-Canadians to a
Jew — Ezekiel Hart — three
times elected their representative
to the Legislative Assemble.

president of the Toronto Philhar-
monic Society.

These, and countless other facts
never before widely known were
unearthed by Mr. Sack in this
first systematic history of Cana-
dian Jewry. The present volume
deals with the period from the
French regime to the end of the
nineteenth century and is to be
followed by a second work which
will trace the history of the Jews
to the present.
In this volume the reader will
readily realize how deep are the
roots planted by the ancestors of
present-day Jewry. We are told
that Canadian Jews fought in ev
cry battle for political and con-
stitutional liberty; they helped
frame the country's laws; they
built cities where none had pre-
viously existed, and opened up
new and barren territory.
The "History of the Jews in
Canada" will probably be used
more as a reference work for the
scholar than as a volume for the
general reader; criticism, if any,
is that the book is lacking in
striking literary and dramatic ef-
fects. A work of such enormous
industry, learning and intelligence
deserves the attention of both
Jews and non-Jews who are in-
terested in learning more about
their country.

Somehow when freedom of move-
ment is allowed, gross economic
evils have a tendency to relieve
themselves somewhat, as the west-
ward movement of our own Amer-
ican people in earlier days tended
to produce a more stabilized eco-
nomy.
There are countries far more
culpable in this respect than the
United States. Israel Zangwill once
spoke of the continents who "in
their modesty' have mistaken
themselves for countries. Such
lands as Australia ,for example,
or Canada. They could double or
quintuple their population with-
out being crowded. They cannot
forever go on monopolizing such
vast areas for so few people.
The fight against the White
Paper in Palestine, in a certain
sense, is a fight for this very
thing — a fight for opening the
doors of the whole world again
to whomever may wish to come
We remember what the English
said, when the Pope claimed the
new world. They asked the Pope
to show them the deed in which
God Almigty had given him title
to the land. God Almighty never
gave anyone an exclusive deed to
unoccupied land.

ample to call upon our people to

rise from their spiritual and in-

be aroused. We need now a spir-
