American plane, a bomber, was ob-
served approaching the Island of
I3orkum. The Island of Borkum
was a possession of the then Ger-
man Reich and is located in the
North Sea not far from the city
of Bremen. There was on this
Island a village by the name of
Borkum. Anti-aircraft opened fire
on the plane and the plane landed
in a sort of marsh near a battery.
Seven flyers were seen to emerge
from the plane, one of whom had
a slight wound on the forehead.
A German soldier supplied a band-
age which was applied. The fly-
ers immediately surrendeFed and
gave up their arms. The evidence
will then show that the flyers
were taken to the battery and
that the accused Kurt Goebel!,
who was then commanding offi-
cer said, "You bring them to me
alive?" The evidence will then
show that during the interrogation
by Lt. Wentzel one of the guards
was relieved by Capt. Goebel! be.
cause he was too old and not
strict enough with the prisoners.

"The evidence will further show
that Goebell then made a tele-
phone call to the accused Jan J.
Akkermann the burgomeister of
L'oricum and notified him that the
flyers were going to be led

man Armed forces ran out of the
crowd and shot a flyer who had
fallen. He was beaten until finally
he was so exhausted he fell and
then was shot.

"The evidence will show that
Lt. Weber and Lt. Wentzel, both
of them accused, rode tip and
down this procession on bicycles
and urged the civilians in a loud
voice, "Here come the dogs, beat
the pigs, kill them." A little later
when the march turned down a
side street, the same PFC who had
shot and killed the little flyer, ran
up and shot several other flyers
in the back of the head. The evi-
dence will show that at that point
Sgt. Schmitz and Petty officer
Wittmack also shot some of the
flyers. Thereafter a German doc-
tor arrived on the scene examined
each of the flyers to make sure he
was dead and pronounced them
all dead. The death march was
over.
