NEW YORK (JTA)--Dr. Ste-
phen S. Wise, president of the
American Jewish Congress, has
charged Columbia University with
violation of the anti-descrimina-
tion clause of the state tax law in
an application filed with the New
York City Tax Commissioner to
camel the University's tax ex-
emption.
Dr. Wise, suing both as a tax-
payer and as chief executive of
the Congress, said, "an institution
claiming to be nonsectarian, whims
selects students not solely and ex-
clusively because of their intel-
lectual ability and moral charac-
ter, but for the avowed purpose
of serving racial or religious prej-
udices, does not devote its prop-
erty exclusively to educational
purposes and is not an educational
institution within the meaning of
the tax law."

JERUSALEM (JTA)---In an ap-
parent attempt to shield the ex-
alufti of Jerusalem, the steno-

American inquiry committee's
hearings has omitted a remark by
Atini Bey Abdul Hadi, Arab IIgh-
er rnmrnittee spokesman, to the
effect that the Mufti cooperated
with the Nazis because he thought
they might win. The omission was
noted when the official record of
last Tuesday's hearings was made
publit .

Towards the end of last Tues-
day's hearings, Richard Grossman,
one of the British members, con-

'The Mufti was only trying to
make a deal in case Germany won
the war."

Although this remark and a fur-
ther exchange between Abdul
Hadi and Grossman was passed by
the censor and published in the
local press. the record omits the
episode with the explanation: "At
this point the witness dispensed

CLIFTON AVENUE - CINCINNATI 20, OHIO

At a great meeting held in th 3
Synagogue auditorium of Shaare y
Zedek Thursday night, March 14
the Zionist Organization of De
troit opened a great drive for Zi
onist membership. The drive i ;
nation-wide, and is aimed at a
goal of a half million members
for the Zionist Organization of
America.
The objectives of the drive were
stated in the opening remarks of
Rabbi Leon Fram, President of
the Zionist Organization of De-
troit. "The British Government,"
said Rabbi Fram, "has, publicly
and deliberately sought to create
the impression that there is a dis-
tinction between Zionists and
Jews. The enemies of a Jewish
Commonwealth in Palestine are
making the claim that the Jewish
people as a whole is 'Indifferent
to a Jewish Homeland and that
'the Zionists are merely a vocif-
erous minority. This is untrue and
it must be proven untrue. 'rho
only way to prove that a Jewish
State in Palestine is the expres-
sion of the will of the Jewish peo-
ple as a whole Is to be able to
show an overwhelmingly large
membership In the Zionist Or-
ganization."
Rabbi Fram then introduced
the new chairman of the mem-
bership campaign, Dr. Philip E.
Lachman, a returned veteran. Dr.
Lachman described his compre-
hensive plans for enrolling 10,000
Detroit Jews as members of the
Zionist Organization. He appealed
especially to other returning vet-
erans to conic to the aid of their

The principal speaker of the
evening was the famous journal-
ist and author, Pierre Van Paas-
sen, who delivered a stirring ad-
dress on the situation in Pales-
tine. "As a Christian," he said, "I
endorse Rabbi Fram's statement
that it is absolutely necessary for
the Jews of America to demon-
strate that the Zionists and the
Jewish people are one and insep-
arable. Every American Jew must
register his demand that the
White Paper be rescinded, un-
linfited immigration be allowed,
and a Jewish Commonwealth be
established in Palestine. Member-
ship in the Zionist Organization Is
the only way in which you can
register your will so that it is un-
derstood by the British Govern-
ment in London, by the State De-
partment in Washington and by

Dr. Lachman appealed for work-
ers to cover every Jewish meet-
ing, to appeal for enrollments over
the telephone and to go from
house to house asking Jews of De-
troit to register In behalf of a

was thwarted by Czech soldiers
