Juniors, provides spiritual heirs
and followers.
For the purpose of encouraging
and arousing the interests of the
youth, the society plans to erect
its own center with special club
rooms for various social functions.
The society has distributed five
thousand dollars in 1945 for va-
rious social, welfare and charitable
causes such as the War Chest,
anti-defamation and anti discrim-
ination purposes which combat
anti-Semitsm, Geverkshaften Cam-
paign Mizrachi Yeshivaths, Jew-
ish National Fund, Jewish Work-
ers Committee, Vaad Hatzalah,
Vaad Hoezra, Los Angeles Sana-
torium, Russian War Relief, Polish
Jewish Federation, Red Cross,
U. S. 0. and other similar groups.
The society shows great inter-
est in the general social problems,
local and national, which arise
from time to time and aids in the
solution of these problems.
The Turover Aid Society is rep-
resented in both national and lo-
cal organizations. It serves on the
American Jewish Congress and on
the Jewish Community Council,
which it helped to organize and
in which Mr. Isidore Sosnick
Turover president, is a member
of the Executive Committee.
During the time of the depres-
sion the society had its own loan
corporation which helped many
of its members to stand on their
own feet. In the First World War,
every member of the society was
taxed for the benefit of the suf-
ferers.
In the present World War, one
hundred and twenty young men,
children of the members, partici-
pated, ready to make the supreme
sacrifice.
Three heroes failed to return.
The society mourns their loss to-
gether with their parents. To hon-
or their sacred membership, plans
are being laid to bring over three
children from Europe.
The Turover Aid Society is in-
debted greatly to all its officers
and leaders and expresses to them
as well as to all its members sin-
cere thanks and appreciation.
The present leadership consists
of the following officers:
Isidore Sosnick, President; Wm.
Hof m a n, 1st Vice-President;
David Hirtz, 2nd Vice-President;
Max L. Roberts, Financial Secre-
tary; Julius Gotlieb, Recording
Secretary; Morris Zuroff, Treas-
urer; Joe Epstein, Hospitaler;
Chas. Ablecop, Trustee; John Le-
bowsky, Trustee; Sol Lumberg,
Trustee; Abraham Grant, Trustee.

in all my research where the au-
thentic history of Rabbi Kohler
can be found," said Katz. "It is
authentic because he himself
wrote it. There are no original
records In the Temple of that pe-
riod. Dr. Franklin's book on the
Temple tells of Kohler but his ref-
erences were gathered from early
members who relied only on their
memory. It is well known that in
such cases, there are always sev-
eral accounts differing both in
fact and opinion. There is a great
deal of material on the life and
work of Rabbi Kohler but they
all dismiss his Detroit ministry in
one sentence."
The life of Kohler is of great
importance to any historian and
therefore to even a layman, He is
regarded, in the Universal Jewish
encyclopedia, as the most power-
ful intellectual force. in Reform
Judaism in America.
"By his many-sided scholar-
ship," says that volume, "he, more
than any other leader, provided
the foundation for the ideas
which dominate the Reform
movement."
Kohler's "Jewish Theology" is
regarded as a classic. From De-
troit, he went to Chicago's Sinai
Congregation. From there he
went to Congregation Beth El in
New York and from there he
went on to become the illustrious
president of the Hebrew Union
College.
