You can have your Frank Sin-
atra's, Como's, Crosby's, or what
have you—I'll take Harry Cool—
in the flesh (only I'm 'f raid his
charming wife won't let me). His
soft, mellow tones does things
(mamma mia! and what things!).
His band, too, is one of the finest
and best suited to the dimensions
and acoustics of
Lee 'n' Eddies.
There's been
sonic very fine
bands t h ere
whose m us i c
out-shouted the
customers (not
the fault of the
bands but the
room's). But
not so, Harry
Cool's aggrega-
tion. He man-
Harry Cool ages, quite dip-
lomatically, to keep the boys tuned
down (and believe me that's a
tuff job for the brass section) .. .
Jean Shirley, a very comely little
miss, very skillfully fulfills her
duties as band vocalist. Dean
Murphy attained that perfection
in the art of acquiring and pre-
serving a flawless reputation as
a renowned and polished satirist.
He has developed an art out of
mimicry. His material is brilliant,
his timing excellent, his faculty
for remembering people an en-
viable accomplishment. He is des-
tined to long remain a star of the
country's smartest places. Lee 'n'
Eddies continues its policies of
bringing distinguished stars and
outstanding personalities for the
pleasure of Detroit's audiences.

Miami Beach hostelries to be re-
turned by the armed forces. A
complete reconversion job is in
progress. Date for opening set for
Jan. 16. Here's hoping. Loads of
my friends are on their way down
to the warm clime! I told them
just to mention my name, Mrs.
Grossman.
•
Rosenberg's—the new owners of
the old reliable establishment
Pereira's . . . They've added new
equipment, new facilities to make
catering your parties a finer and
better work of art.
Seen places — Larry Gentile
(Dawn Patrol, CKLW) and a par-
ty of friends including Beatrice
Kay at Lee 'n' Eddies . . Chaz
Chase (Downtown Theatre) flank-
ed by two lovely females, there,
too—as was Joan Barry (Club 509).
•
What a bombshell of dusky pul-
chritude is Toby Winters, who's
held over for the new show at
Club Zombie. The gal's got class
and is really a dancer and does
wows with her interpretive num-
bers. She swings a wicked torso.
Joan Holmes, singing star of the
show remains too as does the un-
usually attractive line of tapretties
—the Lillianettes. A flock of new
talent comes in for the new pro-
duction by Irving Alexander--
"Hong Kong Blues" on Monday.
•
Jules Sanders, operator of Hugh
Allen's has been doing a tremen-
dous job in direct mail advertis-
ing. His slogan "from the original
idea to the post office," thoroly
covers your needs. Jules was the
first G. I. in Detroit to receive ap-
proval to establish business and to
purchase surplus government ma-
chinery.

We hear from Elaine Handlin
(Boston, Mass.) who's back at
Massachusetts State College after
visiting her aunt and uncle, the
Marty Handlins, that she had "such
a nice time in Detroit and every-
body out theah are such deahs."
"Cawnt" you just hear her saying
that?

Gypsy fiddles are playing—and
how—at the London Chop House.
It's Martzi and Godla, 2 men, a
fiddle and piano. Those gypsy
tunes, mamma mia! Can't you just
see the campfires glow, carefree
nomads gathered 'round gaily
singing dances, guitars strumming,
fiddles playing (stop it, my
nerves!). To bring you back to
earth again, there's Frank Ga-
gen's Orchestra for dancing .
there's excellent food for the most
exacting; rare wines and liquors
and there's always Les Gruber, the
very genial host. Ruth Whelan at
the piano for your amusement
every afternoon.

The Youth Education League,
whose luncheon is scheduled at
Latin Quarter for Feb. 19, has
been doing an excellent job in the
philanthropic field. One of its par-
amount functions is the help in
fostering 10 children. Their con-
tribution to the American Jewish
Congress toward that end this
year was $3,000.

Mort Powell, the current attrac-
tion (and I mean attraction) in
pianovations at downtown's friend-
ly Book Bar (opp. Book-Cadillac)
is setting a neat mark for others
to shoot at with the subtle artistry
of a modern
master, Mort
does a thoro
and satisfying
job. He comes
here directly
from Asbury
Park, N. J. .. .
has appeared
for lengthy en-
gagetn ents at
" Downbeat
Room," Chicago,
" C e l e b r i t y Mort Powell
Room," Philadelphia, was with Joe
Richman's and other known or-
chestras. "Chick" Gaines, the very
genial manager continues to charm
the ladies and please the men.
(Pay no 'tention, Mrs. G.)

Setting a new high for name at-
tractions Club 509 introduces the
much-publicized Joan Barry, ex-
protege of Charlie Chaplin, to De-
troit. An eye-full of feminine pul-
chritude, Miss Barry gives out in
song. She is responsible for much
of the additional business that

It's a Lovely Spot!

Club 509 is enjoying. Much of the
same credit is due Dick Havilland,
the really clever, zany character
who M. C.'s the show. He adds zip
and zest to the entire show. His
material is clever and Its cleverly
delivered. Sgt. Johnny Rullo,
scorches the air with his hot
trumpet and I don't mean perhaps,
either. Johnny sings, too and talk
about audience favoritism—he's a
regular pet. While stationed at
Selfridge Field, Johnny won the
Major Bowes contest and at one
time sang with Paul Whiteman's
band, with Dolly Dawn and others.
That bombshell of song, Belva
White keeps the regulars coming
more regular . . Belva has many
of them so mesmerized that they
have their mail sent here. It's Lee
Walter's music.

soon over the air when the "Tune

Francis James collaborated.
