With Sally Fields

Marty recently got back from 4
years service, most of it in the
Pacific. Glad to be home? What
do you think?
Mr. Hal Hixon has been ap-
pointed Cargo Traffic Represent-
ative for American Airlines, Jack
A. Tompkins, District Manager,
announced today. . . Hixon for-
merly represented American in a
similar capacity here prior to his
enlistment in the armed forces.
He is a Navy veteran of three
years service in the Naval Air
Transport Service, is a native of
Michigan and a graduate of
Solhern Methodist University,
D. ;is, Texas. Good luck, Mr.
Hixon!
Well, hello, and greetings and
salutations! You could have
knocked me over with just the tip
of your little finger . . . After
steen years it takes the Chronicle
to bring back old friends . . .

1)

Cele (Drapkin) Beaman writes
from Miami, Florida—and me
'most freezing to death—"I hope
I haven't been away long enough
to have you say, 'Who the devil
is this? Gosh, I hope not!' The
Chronicle was getting very dull
(quote, ye editor—"that was be-
fore the Cy Aaron - Lou Enfield
regime—unquote) and just as
we decided not to open the paper
again — there you were — Lou
("that's the better half," unquote)
and I were so thrilled—at least
we know what you are talking

about and your `Hittin' the Hi

Spots' brings Detroit close to us."
—Thanks, Cele, it was swell of
you to write and, believe me, it
was like digging your teeth into
something good and wholesome
and life-sustaining like maybe a
good slice of pumpernickle bread
(and you ought to remember how
I 'love' pumpernickle)—filling and
satisfying . . And I don't mind
telling you, baby, receiving let-
ters like yours is the life and sus-
tenance of every 'colyumist'.

Downtown's most popular stop-
ping-off spot — Book Bar, oppo-

site the Book-Cadillac Hotel. .
Always a congenial atmosphere
. . always on the alert to please,
it's no wonder the management
(Chick Gaines) has made so many
many new friends — and, of
course, with his old friends it's
always a must. . . The entertain-
ment is always of the best. .
The newest addition is Mort Pow-
ell, a manipulator of the ivories,
who comes here direct from As-
bary Park.
This came from Harry Thomas
who, incidentally, celebrated his
10th anniversary in the clothing
business recently. (Seems like
yesterday when Harry and Jerry
Bratt were in the luggage busi-
ness out Woodward - oh, well,
the years roll along.) -- "Dear
Sally: Almost 14 years ago I took
you home, the wife was with me,
of course," (of course) "and the
next morning she had a baby
boy — even tho' it only weighed
2 lbs. 4 oz. So, if you're around
about the middle of April, lera
do it again," the means drive me
home) "only this time a bigger
one, I sincerely hope." . . I hope
so, too, Harry. And, darn it, I
don't live in Dearborn - - must
have been the long ride did it 14
years ago but I'll be around!

Ted Lipsitz' Supper Club is
about to be redone - more beau-
tifully, more swankily, more dec-
oratively . . but Ted continues to
do business with Chet Everhart,
that grand guy at the "grand,'
holding sway, and lovely Ethel
Howe queenly reigning in song-
istrations that please, thrill and
hold her audience. . . There's
dancing for "them" that love to
trip the light fantastic . . food
that tempts the most exacting
palate, and liquors and wines to
your taste.
Mail from all parts of the coun-
try -- From Al Capley, public re-
lations man for Lake-Spiro-Shur-
man Inc. of Memphis, Tenn. (that
guy sure knows his business when

he seeks Chronicle circulation for

his clients) — The net income for
1945, of Plough, Inc., Memphis,
Tenn., proprietary medicine, cos-
metic and household necessity
manufacturer, is estimated to ap-
proximate $465,000, equal to $1.55
a share on 300,000 common
shares, Abe Plough, President,
told stockholders in notifying
them of the recent listing of
Plough, Inc., common stock on
the New York Stock Exchange.
Earnings as estimated would com-
pare with a net of $1.48 a share
reported for 1914. Approximately
100,000,000 packages of Plough
products were shipped in 1945,
Mr. Plough said.

Cadet Larry Spira (son of Mr.
and Mrs. Danny Marvin) was
home until Jan. 3 from Castle
Hgts. Military Academy at Lab-
anon, Tenn.
The well-rounded revue cur-
rently at the Latin Quarter makes
for a thoroughly enjoyable eve-
ning. That is, if you enjoy really
fine entertainment . . and who
doesn't? . . First there's head-
liner Sunny Skylar, whose engag-
ing personality coupled with his
vibrant voice, are two reasons
why the patrons refuse to let him
leave the stage. Sunny's song
repertoire includes several of the
tunes he wrote himself: "Amor,"
"Bestune Mucho," "A Little Bit
South of North Carolina," and
more recently "Put That Ring On
My Finger," and "Waitin' for the
Train to Come In." Comedy "ma-
gician" Jack Herbert easily winds
the crowd around his magical fin-
gers with his first on-stage bash-
ful grin, and his laugh-provokikf
magic feats, which are accom-
panied by an extremely clever line
of amusing chatter. F l e x i b l e-
boned Jimmy Rae amazes with
his seemingly impossible acrobatic
stunts, and pert Lorraine Kasa
receives much applause for her
unusual "story dance" about a
little French girl who delivers
beautiful gowns to a wealthy
lady .. clever routine and a clev-
er gal. (Lorraine is one home-
town gal who has made good!)
Phil and Mildred Crane, singers,
offer Gershwin, Romberg and
Berlin selections. Virginia Tiff's
Latin Quarter Lovelies frame the
revue with excellent production
numbers; Chriss Cross provides
dance music, and Ramon provides
slick rhumba rhythms during the
interludes. . . Toni Montgomery,
popular organist in the, cocktail
lounge, is still gathering an ever-
creasing amount of admirers.

Food! food! Good Italian food-
ye gourmets of what's what in de-
licious dishes have your choice -
if you're around Cass - Sibley -
it's Papa Joe's, the talk of the
town - if you're out Woodward
Ave., not too far out -
Caruso's, the good old reliable
bar and restaurant known for
ever so long for its fine Italian
dishes.
What a nice, nice spot the Rio
Grande is (used to be the 1011
Club before Maxie Spiegelman
took over and made it into the
fine eating and drinking rendez-
vous it is). . . Saw many friends
I knew there, including a number
of the "Times" boys and theie
wives (and I mean wives). . .
Jack Cooper, who's been with
Maxie for several years (previ-
ously at the Book Bar) does
some excellent pianovations. .
Ask him to do his own song --
"Counting," quite a sentimental
piece. . . Heard Louie Cassio, fine
voice, doing some well known
semi-classics and popular tunes,
accompanied by Bob Deichert on
the accordion who does a good
job, too. . . Both are just out of
service. Rio Grande has a fine
private dining room for special
parties or sales meetings.

Club Zombie is still giving out
with those terrific sepia shows
packed full of rhythm, song,
dance and comedy. From Irving
Alexander to the torrid tunes of
Cecil Lee's band it's one grand
round of fun. .!
And now, good nite! Happy
dreams! And, oh, such a happy
and contented New Year.
