Hillel Scholarship
Awarded E. Malitz

High on the list of busy stu-
dents on U. of M.'s campus is
Ethel Isenberg who took part in
the recent Speech Department pro-
duction "What a Life." Her duties
as member of the Bnai Brith Hil-
lel Foundation's Student Council
have kept Ethel on the go. Ethel
is co-chairman of the Hillel Play-
ers whose plans include the bring-
ing of programs to Bnai Brith
lodges and auxiliaries throughout
the state from time to time dur-
ing the year. The Junior Girl's
Play is another activitiy in which
Ethel will participate along with
Detroiters Constance Schwartz and
Janet Laib. This class program
will be presented Jan. 24 through
26 not so long after the Sopho-
more Cabaret of Dec. R on which
Sarah Simons was eligibility chair-
man and Rita Kollman a member
of the dancing chorus.

Spanish society, has neatly taken
care of all of its financial worries
by the recent election of Morris
Bornstein as treasurer.

Something new in the air is the
League House Dance Committee
which will sponsor informal after-
noon and evening dances in the
League and Union for all coeds
in the University League Houses.
Helping "hold the reins" for these
affairs will be Marcie Duhinsky
of Ishpeming, assistant chairman.
and Anita Ruskin, in charge of
the coke bar. Marcie is also a
member of the staff of Gargoyle,
campus humor magazine. Localites
who are staff members include
Francis Chapin, Harry Broder,
Ann Dinetz, Phyllis Morgm,
Nancy Schiller and Edith Shapiro.
Jean Feerer, as a member of the
.junior board of Garg, is circula-
tion manager.

Council Seeks Names
Of Relatives In Detroit

The Detroit Section, National
Council of Jewish Women, is anx-
ious to locate the following, in or-
der to deliver messages from rel-
atives abroad. Anyone having such
information kindly notify our of-
fice at 8904 Woodward Ave., Room
203, Detroit 2, Mich., Ma. 6970.
Nella and Ester Mermelstein
were listed among 476 Jews of
Czechoslovak nationality who ar-
rived in Sweden in July 1945. They
want to locate Samuel Teurston, a
Detroit relative.
Chaja Rosenberg, now at Fort
Ontario, Oswego, New York, is
trying to locate her brother, Har-
ry Stahholz, who resided in Of-
fenback-am-Main, Germany, until
1907, then emigrated to Detroit.
A cablegram from Katowice,
Poland, to locate Louis Rosenberg
for a niece Dora, daughter of F.
Syma.
A Mr. Gelbardowicz, formerly of
Poland is being sought by Rywka
Widawska, age 26, of Ozorkow.
Karoly Berger, of Detroit, is be,
ing sought by Erzcebet Goldmann,
of Camp Salzwedel, who is a rel-
ative.
Lewis Mark is being sought by
his niece, Eda Silverman, daugh-
ter of Lia, who was a daughter of
Ester Elana. Mr. Mark at one time
visited these people in Poland.

Marvin Rosenthal

Marvin Richard Rosenthal was
recently discharged from the Army
after 26 months of overseas duty
in the European Theater. Ile is
now at home with his parents

William J. Saulson
Sgt. William .1. Saols.-1 has re-

-ently been discharged after serv-
ing. 28 months in the Mediter-
ranean Theater of OpOrations.
While overseas he was in North
Africa, Italy, France, Egypt and
Switzerland.
Sgt. Saulson is the son of Mrs.
Lillian Saulson of Mack Ave.

Conscription In Peace

A special meeting of the Jew-
ish Women's European Welfare
Organization will be held Monday,
Jan. 7, at 1 p.m. at the Bnai
Moshe Synagogue, Lawrence and
Dexter.
At this meeting relief checks
will be sent to the Palestine or-
phaned families on the regular
supporting list of the organization.
New relief cases will also be taken
up.
Final arrangements will be made
for a home cooked luncheon to be
given Wednesday, Jan. 9, at the
synagogue. Mrs. Pliskow is the
:Mailman of this affair.

"Shall We Have Peacetime Con-
scription?" is the question which
Rabbi Leon Fram will discuss in
his lecture at the Sabbath Eve
Services at Temple Israel, Friday
night, Jan. 11, at 8:30, in the lec-
ture hall of the Detroit Institute
of Arts.

HERBERT W. MORRIS

The Hillel Scholarship, newly es-
tablished by the Ann Arbor Bnai
Brith Lodge in memory of Flight
Officer Herbert W. Morris, has
been awarded to Eugene Malitz
of Detroit, it has been announced
by Herbert 0. Schlager, acting
president of the Lodge. Flight Of-
ficer Morris, a member of the Bnai
Brith Hillel Foundation at the
University of Michigan, lost his
life a year ago in action over
France. The scholarship in the
amount of one hundred dollars will
be awarded each year to a mem-
ber of the Bnai Brith Hillel Foun-
dation in Ann Arbor.
Flight Officer Morris was the
son of the late Henry Morris, past
president of the Ann Arbor Bnai
Brith Lodge. He enrolled in the
Air Corps in October 1942. At that
time he was a sophomore at the
University of Michigan. He receiv-
ed his training at the Air Force
Twin Engine School at Stuttgart,
Arkansas, and was sent overseas
in May of 1944.
Flight Officer Morris lost his
life while piloting a B-24. He had
previously participated in several
bombing missions which originat-
ed at his base in Italy.
Malitz, a pre-medical .student at
the University of Michigan, was
recently discharged from the Na-
vy. Prior to his discharge he serv-
ed as an Apprentice Seaman an:1
was stationed on the University
campus in the V-12 Program. For
the last two years he has been
serving as a Student Cantor at the
Hillel Foundation. A member of
the Universtiy Glee Club, he re-
cently played one of the leading
roles in the light opera, "Naughty
Marietta," produced on the Uni-
versity campus last spring.
Before enrolling at the Univer-
sity of Michigan, Malitz played an
active role in the Junior Congre-
gation at Shaarey Zedek.
As a consequence of being
awarded the Ann Arbor Bnai
Brith Scholarship, Malitz has been
given a number of special assign
ments in connection wth the reli-
gious and music activities at the
Foundation.

"In Peace as in War, Team
Work," is the subject to be dis-
cussed by Dr. Alvin Hersch and
Circuit Judges Joseph Moynihan
and Philip Elliott, at the forum
presented by the Men's Club of
Congregation Bnai Moshe, Tues.
eve., Jan., 8, at 8:30.
The Forum is sponsored by the
Detroit Round Table of Catholics,
Jews and Protestants and Rev.
Jos. Q. Mayne, the executive sec-
retary of the organization, will be
the moderator.
An added feature wil be a mono-
drama by Louis Lytton, veteran
stage actor, entitled, "I Am An
American." Mr. Lytton is appear-
pearing in Detroit under the aus-
pices of the Round table.

Nathanya Clerk
Head in Tripoli

JERUSALEM (JTA) — The for-
mer town clerk of the municipal-
ity of Nathanya, Major M. Arkin
of the British Army, has been
named military governor of Tri-
poli, where over 100 Jews were
killed in riots last month, it was
learned here. Major Arkin will
also act as mayor of the city.

"The Immediate Problems of Our
Day." Among the other subjects
which the Rabbi will discuss in
this series will be: "Industrial
Confict," "The Housing Problem,"
"The Problem of Inflation," "So-
cial Security," "Social Medicine,"
and "The Problem of Discrimina-
tion in Employment and in Edu-
cation."
At the Sabbath Eve Service of
January 11, Richard Owen, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Owen, will
celebrate his Bar-Mitzvah. The
Congregation will be guests of Mr.
and Mrs. Owen at a reception in
honor of their son, following the
service.

Home Relief Holds
Election of Officers

On Thursday, Dec. 27, the regu-
lar meeting and election of officers
of the Home Relief Society was
held in the home of Mrs. Al. Weis-

large American flag for his court-
