Zionist Organization of Detroit

At a special meeting held last Thursday night, the
Zionist Organization of Detroit condemned the statement
of Morgan. Their condemnation reads as follows:

Fred M. Butzel .. .

"The charge is not borne out by any reports we get from a wide-
spread group of authorities. Practically all people interested in relief
work in Europe are impressed by the difficulties in which Jews live in
Poland. The idea of a Jewish plot to force the Jews into Palestine is
fantastic."

(1,

"The attack made on the Jews by Lt. General
Morgan is vicious. Ile is following the pattern laid out
by the Nazis in their anti-Semitic campaign. This or-
ganization feels that there should be an investigation
made of this general to determine why a man with
such tendencies holds such a high position in a worthy
organization like UNRRA."

Lawrence Crohn .. .

"The man is palpably a British agent to further the line of British
ineptitude and chicanery. I don't think we should dignify his state-
ment with any reply."

It was decided at the same meeting after some dis-
cussion, that no statement should be released to the non-
Jewish press of this city.

Aaron Droock • . •

•

"Morgan's statement is an outrageous fabrication and has no basis
in fact. The only reason for it is to manufacture sentiment against
the opening of Palestine to the Jews and to stimulate world public
opinion against the Jewish demands for unrestricted immigration tc
Palestine."

Abram Meyerowitz . . .

A

"We had the testimony of Polish officials about anti-Semitism in
Poland. The reliability of this testimony is unquestionable. The fact
that the Jews are fleeing to Germany corroborates this testimony. If
conditions were endurable, I am sure they would have stayed where
they were."

James I. Ellmann .. .

Judge Charles Rubiner . . .•

"This is not the first nor the last nefarious scheme of the British
government to cover up for its failure to make good on a contract
entered into with the Jewish people and the world at 'large to allow
the unhampered development of the Jewish people in Palestine."

"The truth travels with feet of lead to overtake a lie." The truth
here will probably be slow to overtake this lie and meantime the
damage is done. This is part of a program of continued persecution
of a defenseless remnant of a people.

Rabbi Leon Fram .. .

Abraham Srere .. .

"There is a plot but it is in the other direction. England is trying
to prejudice world opinion and predetermine the findings of the Anglo-
Jewish Inquiry Commission."

"It is an outrageous charge and indicates Britain's attempt to be-
fuddle the issue and hang on to Palestine."

Isaac Franck .. .

Rabbi Joseph Thumin .. .

"The general's statement is based on a deplorable lack of informa-
tion or a pathetic lack of sympathy for human suffering. Whichever
it may be, it is an instance of the highest irresponsibility in a
situation where human beings are starving and dying."

"I am convinced there are pogroms in Poland. The statement of
the General is obviously a lie. I think it arises out of a subconscious
desire to believe that there is a world plot of Jews to rule the world.
It is the same lie as the Elders of Zion charge.

Judge William Friedman .. .

"It is true that the Jews, out of their suffering and Misery, want
desperately to go to Palestine. But the charge that there is a world
organization plotting to get them needlessly out of Poland is idiotic."

"The man doesn't know what he's talking about. He is evidently
a representative of the British Foreign Office and speaks for them.
Philip Adler, of the Detroit News, is right on the scene and his accu-
racy has never been questioned. His reports are full of the brutality
and violence to which our people are subjected. The flight of Jews
from Poland to Germany speaks for itself. Furthermore, the Polish
government recently passed legislation against discrimination and
made it punishable by death. This shows the amount of anti-Semitism
there must be in Poland today."

Response to the story of Sir Frederic Morgan's wild charges of
a Jewish plot to force a mass exodus to Palestine was definite and
unanimous on the part of the Jewish leaders in this city. Below are
the statements of some of them.

Henry Wineman . . .

"We have no way to confirm what is going on in Poland except
that Jewish Telegraphic Agency Reports show pogroms there. I took
it for granted that Jews , were leaving Poland because of these
pogroms.
"I believe this statement is colored by British politics and that
it is prejudiced by the views of the British Colonial Office. What the
general said was both prejudiced and untrue."

Mrs. Louis Glasier .. .

"The statement looks to me like British propaganda to undermine
Zionism. It certainly isn't true. I have reports from returned GI's who
tell me that the reports of brutality are accurate, only much worse."

Rabbi Max J. Wohlgelernter .. .

Dr. B. Benedict Glazer .. .

"I have just returned from a trip to New York where I have had
opportunity to confer with representatives of a number of national
Jewish organizations recently returned from Europe. I spoke to
Zorach Warhaftig, Dr. Solomon Schonfleld of London, and Leon Gel-
man, president of the Mizrachi. They all confirm earlier reports of
actual pogroms in Poland. Mr. Warhaftig told of personal meetings
with several leading Jewish professionals who had been put in charge
of hospitals and industrial plants under the new Polish regime but
were forced to leave their posts, literally at the point of a gun.
"The exodus to Germany in large numbers is true but it is an out-
growth of terrifying conditions beyond the control of either the
scattered and emaciated Jewish communities or the new Polish govern-
ment."

"It is an outrageous libel of a suffering people. The general, ap-
parently, hasn't learned much from the lessons of Nazism in Europe.
He is repeating the same kind of unfounded charges that have charac-
terized the professional anti-Semite."

Dr. Shmarya Kleinman . .

"I think it is outrageous and that is a modest word for it."

Julian Krolik .. .

"The general is mistaken in assuming that the pressure of Jews
wanting to leave came from above rather than from below. It is ob-
vious that many want to leave Europe because they have been sub-
jected to such terrific hostility. The general is quite right when he
says this is a very serious problem and has not been handled properly."

Judge Simon Rif kind, Frankfurt, Germany .. .

From Frankfurt, Germany, Judge Simon Rifkind, advisor on Jew-
ish affairs at the U. S. Occupation Headquarters gave out a reply to
the statement of General Morgan.
"The conception of a world wide organization is pure poppycock,"
he said. "General Morgan's statement predicting a mass exodus from
Europe is like talking about the vanishing buffalo. The exodus has
already taken place. The Nazis took care of that. But it was not to
the land of the living."

Benjamin Laikin .. .

"I think it is a piece of propaganda from the British Foreign
Office in an attempt to break our spirit. I know there is not a word
of truth in it."
