With Sally Fields

outfit is hooking the big show of
the year at the Big House in Jack-
son. 'Twill be a sensational show
featuring leading bistro's star acts
with Joe Sanders band.
•
The memory of last week's show
at Lee 'n' Eddie's lingers on. . .
What a dialogue
r linguistthat
Jackie Green is
. . a clever boy,
too . . and the
echoes of Tea-
. garden's band
still reverberate
. . . I hope it
doesn't d row n
out the "pleas-
ant for the ear"
as well as dance
music of De-
troit's own Bob-
by Byrne. Bob-
Zero Mostel
by, who is a
product of Cass Tech and who
boasts such bands as the Dorgeys'
before embarking on his own, is
hailed as one of the fore-
most of trombonists. Zero Mostel,
who'll be seen shortly on the
screen, was a part-time painter
and art lecturer who literally
whirlwinded into fame on screen,
stage and radio. Uncle Sam re-
cently let him out on the loose
(but honorably!). He is what is
commonly known as a rare specie
of comedy. . . Harry Carroll and
Polly Baker, tin-pan alley composer
(Remember "I'm Chasing Rain-
bows" — I'll let you in on a little
secret — I still am — that was
one of Carroll's biggest hits.) .
Al Larson. the • lucky G.I. who
won the Chitty Simms award on
the Borden radio audition last
week. . . If he looks like he sound-
ed on the air — hubba! hubbal
hubba! The new Gee Cee trio that
features Vic Rossi on vibraphones
is a Delbridge-Gorrell unit tho'
booked in, as is the rest of the
show, by M.C.A. (Music Corpora-
tion of America — which bring
me to the handsome group that
represent them from Big Boy Bar-
ton himself V.P., to Irvine Rose
and Frankie Taylor, inclusive —
must he n policy, can't be just co-
incidental).

If its the proverbial tie, or a
shirt. or a hat or a robe or any
of the accessories so necessary to
the fastidious man - about - town.
Tom Cotter's. noted haberdasher
in the Book-Cadillac Hotel is the
answer to your needs. If it's a
package to be sent out-of-town
or to the boy in the service, you're
sure to find what you want in
the varied selection at Cotter's—
enter at the Book or in the store
on Bagley near the United Artist
Theatre.
•
Every year this time, the late
("Zelige") Hyman Altmans cele-
brated their anniversary on the
Jewish Hour at WJLB. This year
'twill not be a celebration but a
memorial program to the con-
tinuance of his memory. Mr. Alt-
man inaugurated the Yiddish Hour
in Detroit which has brought com-
fort and much entertainment to both
just the Yiddish-speaking as well
as the rest of the Jewish listening
public, for a great many years.
Tune in Sat. rite from 8:30 p.m.
until 10 p.m. and Sunday morn-
ing from 11:45 a.m. until 12:45 p.m.
•
Hey, Freddie where art thou?
The number still is CA. 1040 and
the pre-holiday season is most
over with.
•
, The Bill Boesky's (Helen) have
really been hittin' the hi spots
around the country—New Orleans.
Mississippi. Chicago! Bring back
any new ideas?

man for leaving the letter "p" out
of his name. But what's in a name
anyway except mayly? that Max
has so many friends that Spiegel-
man without the letter "p" mite
be misleading. And the Rio
Grande Cafe deserves the patron-
age of all of Max's friends. The
food is very palatable . . • the
drink dispensers know their stuff
and the atmosphere and entertain-
ment is just right for an evening
of enjoyable indulgence.
•
Too rushed during the busy
holiday season to 'tend to your
own washing? No need to' fret.
The Belle Isle laundry does such
a thoro and reasonable job with
family wash, while the Sno-White
diaper service takes care of babies
needs so surprisingly well—you'd
never do the didies yourself again
once you tried them. Both are
under the same management.
•
Did you hear the latest—Selznik
of Selznik studios and Jenkins of
Paramount pictures were all agog
at Tommy Montgomery's (Latin
Quarter) renditions at the organ
Jenkins especially liked "Stormy
Weather" (right again Sally!)
and came back next evening for a
repeat performance. Tommy sure
looks photogenic to me. One of
these days we'll be saying, "\Ve
knew him when"—and you'd bet-
ter not hi-hat us either, Tommy.
Here's luck, kid. May it all be
good.
•
To all appearances in the night-
ly rounds of yours truly, the Lon-
don Chop House (Les Gruber)
seems to hit a new high for the
smart crowds that make their
nightly appearance at this favor-
ite rendezvous . . . Headlining the
entertainment is Frank Gagen's
orchestra, who's stay at the Chop
House will soon out-winkel Rip
Van Winkel (hope I spelled that
•

right) . . . there's lovely Marvelle,
the singing pianist and Ruth
Whalen in pianovations every after-
noon from 2 to 5 p.m. There's
gonna be lottsa fun there for
New Year's Eve.
•
Watched the proceedings of al-
terations at the Club Arturo. It's
very tastefully being redone in
soft shades, and soft unique
lighting effects. Comfortable
booths where both food and drinks
will be served. The cocktail
lounge portion is roomy and in
tune with the rest of the layout.
Food, real honest-to-goodness Ital-
ian style, will not be served until
about the 10th of January.
Drinks are available now . . . The
Club will be completely done be-
fore the holidays . . . A fine trio
will delight music lovers and a
barrel of fun is in store for every-
one New Year's Eve.

•

Heaven's, I hadn't looked at the
clock. It's almost 3 a.m. and I'm
expecting my boy home from
Frisco on the 3:07 plane . . . The
beat of my heart is being smothered
by the exalted anticipation of see-
ing hint so soon—I can hardly be-
lieve it.
•
Goodnite! or rather good morn-
ing! Here's enough kisses and
hugs to keep you all warm until
(how generous I feel) until next
week.
