off from the world behind an
The Russians had shut themselves
iron curtain; the Americans were disgusted with mankind as met
on their farflung adventures around the world and were again se-
cluding themselves, feeling safe behind their two oceans; the British
were busy in bloody fighting to hold together their colonial empire.
There was unity, though, in one direction. Though they could
hate each other viciously, the peoples combined in hating Jews. This
was particularly a hate that the war was supposed to have con-
sumed and reduced to the rubble that was Berlin.
It was said that hatred of Jews would perish with the despised
Hitler. To put down racism was one of the war's objectives. Racism,
it was said was a racket of the enemies of human liberty; an evil
ideology by which designing men divided the nations in order to con-
quer them.
Now Hitler was dead but his evil ghost was going around the
world. Wherever people suffered poverty, 'cold and hunger they
turned against the Jews, blaming them for all that had befallen them.
Hitler, dead, was the victor.
This was the state of the world at the moment the statesmen,
the generals end the scientists of the land of Meshugah were ready

to launch their atomic bombs.
(Perhaps I should have said at the beginning where on the map
the Meshugah empire is to be found. It covers a large part of

the civilized world. The primitive neoples like the Patagonians,
aren't in it. It is no one nation; it is an axis of all greeds aria
hates and stupidity.)
Meshugah's prime minister himself was there to give the signal.
He had a speech. He said it was all for the welfare of the Mesh-
uganers. He envisaged an ultimate world that would be universally
Meshugah-even to Patagonia, the North Pole, the South Pole and
the remote places in Africa.
He raised his right arm. The soldiers and scientists sprang to
the launching machine. The atomic bombs arose in graceful para-
bolas, speeding toward their distant goals with a speed faster than
light.
The perfected bombs accurately hit their targets in a matter of
seconds. The terrific, almost simultaneous blasts set off a chain of
earth was :et

loose. Cities dissolved, people disintegrated as the

their bodies together were released. All Meshugah fell apart in the
cataclysm.
On all the earth only two living things survived. These were a
pair of monkeys in a tree-male and female.
They looked at the desolation of the world . . . "Now," said the
male, "you and I have to start this mankind ell over again."
They weren't happy about it at all. To start mankind all over
again? No! No! They were afraid of the awful responsibility.
