(The writer of this article was a member of a Protestant mission of mercy to Italy during the war.) Recently I served as a member a commission of three Ameri- I Protestant ministers who nt to Italy on a mission of .endshiP and relief. While there, M'ri I I learned of some instances of friendship and helpfulness that impressed me deeply. For many centuries the Protes- tants and the Jews of Italy have been on friendly terms. Both have ._ been and are still minority groups. :„,-,;,./ Both have suffered severely at the hands of the State because 'if their religious faith. Before the war broke, the Fas- cist Party, at the behest of the Nazis, had passed repressive laws against the Italian Jews. In 1937, when I visited Italy, I found very little evidence of anti-Semitism on the part of the Italian people. The Jews were regarded as loyal and valuable members of Italian soci- ety. All this was changed when Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany became allies. Immediately the lot of the Jews in Italy became a tragic one. As early as 1937, the 1 Protestants spoke of their regret at the measures that they believed would soon be passed against their Jewish neighbors and friends. They showed then a de- sire and a determination to help tnem. A chaplain just returned from Italy recently said, "The Protestants of Italy certainly stood by the Jews right through I heard of it in Paris and learned of it myself in Florence." Here are two stories of what some of them did. In the 'city of Turin, the Wal- ilhdensian Church rented apart- •ments. Their deaconess sudden!y acquired a number of new rela- tives. These she had to visit fre- quently taking with her on her visits food, clothing and medi- cines. All of these new relatives were Jews who had secured or been supplied with false papers and who were cared for and pro- tected by their Protestant neigh- bors, which was a dangerous thing for them to do. In Florence there is a small Waldensian Church. The minis- fa:..., 1,ter's apartment adjoins the church R. auditorium. Underneath the chil- ' dren's playroom and above the roof of the church auditorium they discovered a place where twelve people could be hidden. The Wal- aensian Church and the minister's home became a station on the "underground railroad" by means Annual Membership f Drive For United Hebrew Schools On ROYAL HOTEL WAVES 'MOTEL Hadassah Little Women Intermediate Club Starts in Young Israel Dance Will Be For Young Israel Intermediates Club Members Only was launched at a Simchas Torah The Little Women of Hadassan -4AS will hold their annual member- . ship dance on Dec. 15 in the Eng- lish Room of the Book-Cadillac Hotel.
