Two Foes of Zion
Committee Members;
Outlook Is Gloomy

LONDON (Palcor) -One of the
::ix British members of the Anglo-
American Inquiry Committee into
Palestine and the problem of Jew-
ish DPs, Richard H. S. Crossman,
Laborite M. P., is definitely op-
posed to Zionism, and another
Lord (Robert Craigmyle) Mor-
rison, is far from sympathetic.
The other four, whatever their
views, if any, are of no great
importance, since they are not
outstanding personalities. They
can compare in no way with the
previous inquiry commissions, es-
pecially with the members of the
Lord Peel Commission.

Jewish circles were deeply grati-
fied by Lord Samuel's speech, de-
spite his proposals to place Pal-
estine under a trusteeship provid-
ing, however, racial autonomy,

The Sax-Kay fashion show which
has become a popular event of
Detroit women's organization af-

place at the Book-Cadillac Hotel

most successful affairs of the
season.
Mrs. Joseph Staub, president
thanked the guests and members
for their attendance and coopera-
tion. Mrs. Norman Adilman, do-
nor chairman, told at length and
torcibly of the imperativeness of
continued efforts toward victory.
She told of the workings of Ze-

Open house was held Friday at the Detroit Typesetting Company,
1959 East Jefferson, to mark the formal taking over of the plant by
Herman L. Lewis Jr., who has recently returned from the armed
forces. Herman L. Lewis Sr., who was managing the plant during
his son's absence, will remain only in an advisory capacity. The
occasion was marked by a substantial donation to the Corinne W.
Lewis Hospital Welfare Fund..
In the army for three and a half years, young Lewis was adjutant
of the 96th Fighter Squadron in Burma. During regular combat
duty, he was awarded two battle stars after the battles of Mytkyna
and Bhamo, which were the deciding battles in the fight for northern
and central Burma.
Lewis has been in the typesetting business for more than fifteen
years. He was managing the plant when the war broke out. He
volunteered for a commission in the Army Air Corps and was
accepted at once. When he returned from overseas, having lost nearly
forty pounds weight which he has since entirely regained, he
stepped back into his old job and is now taking over.
While overseas, Lewis met a Chinese engineer named Ling, whose
picture is above with that of the Herman Lewises, Jr. and Sr. Th,2
two became quite friendly. After Lewis returned from the army
and started back in the plant, who should walk in but this same
Ling whom he had left so many thousands of miles away.
Ling had been sent to the United States to be trained for en-
gineering in China under the best American methods. He was
associated with Detroit Edison Company here in this city. Under
the auspices of this company, he had been sent to look over Detroit
Typesetting as an example of a modern plant that would serve as a
model for similar plants in China.
Lewis expects to make many innovations in the business which
is already close to the million-dollar-a-year class. He is married and
has two children.

WASHINGTON (JTA) — The
text of a letter addressed to the
President in connection with his
eeported opposition to the estab-
lishment of Palestine as a Jewish
Commonwealth was made public
here by Senators Robert F. Wag-
ner and Robert A. Taft, co-spon-
sors of the Palestine resolution
now pending in the Senate, from
which Truman has withdrawn his
support.

Technician Fifth Grade David S.
Meyers, who was discharged from
the army on December 8, has been
awarded the Bronze Star Medal
for distinguished and heroic
achievement. A medical man who
carried no arms, he went to the
aid of men wounded in an assault
and rendered them first aid under
the direct fire of the enemy. He
continued to do this even after he
was wounded and, according to the
citation, saved many lives in his
company.
Meyers is now convalescing in
Madagan General Hospital in Fort
Lewis, Washington.

The Palestine debate in the
House of Lords, although inconse-
quential, was characteristic of the
approach of some leading British
spokesmen to the Jewish and Pal-
estine problem. No one expected
a speech friendly to the Jewish
cause from Lord Altrincham, for-
merly Sir Grigg, remembering his
record as British Resident Minis-
ter in the Middle East. But Vis-
count Cranborne's attack on Jew-
ish leaders, and on the Jewish
press in Britain, an attack which
bordered on the malicious, reveals
a painfully strange attitude which
is probably attributable to a bad
conscience stemming from the fact
that he was compelled, while Colo-
nial Secretary, to administer the
White Paper against which he
himself had voted.

Page Three

In the letter, the two Senators
charged that "misrepresentations
and false issues raised with re-
spect to the projected Jewish Com-
monwealth" are intended to "con-
fuse the public." They expressed
the belief that the passage of their
resolution, which calls for even-
tual establishment by Jews of a

free and democratic common-
wealth in Palestine, is more ur-
gently required now than ever
oefore in view of the projected in-
quiry by an Anglo-American com-
mittee.
"It is clear," their letter said,
"that our resolution does no more
than give renewed expression CO
the purposes of the British and
American statesmen who framed
the politics of the Allied nations.'
It cited utterances by Winston
Churchill, Field Marshal Jan
Christian Smuts, Woodrow Wilson
and Lloyd George to prove that
at no time was a racial state
contemplated in Palestine. At the
same time, it pointed out that
their resolution is no more than
a restatement of the position taken
by both major political parties.
