Vaad Hatzalah Reveals Plight
of Million Refugees; Program
NEW YORK --:The New York
headquarters of the Vaad Haat-
zalah - Rehabilitation has just
published a report from its rep-
resentatives overseas, Rabbi S. P.
Wohlgelernter of Seattle, Wash-
ington; Rabbi Dr. Isaac Lewin;
Dr. Zorach Warhaftig, Warsaw
laver and author, and Samuel
Schmidt, publisher.
Their report reveals that there
are at present approximately 80.-
000 Jews in Poland, headed by
a Central Committee in Warsaw.
The Jewish religious communities,
although legally recognized, no
longer enjoy their pre-war stat-
us, i.e., can not impose taxes, and
hence function on a basis similar
to that of religious congregations
in the United States.
Rabbi Dr. David Cahane, Chief
Jewish Chaplain of the Polish
Army, has advised the overseas
delegates that the establishment
of a centralized Jewish religious
authority has been postponed,
pending the return of some 150,-
000 Polish Jews, who are to be
repatriated to Poland along the
lines of an agreement concluded
between Poland and the Soviet
Union.
MAP PROGRAM
Polish Jewry, it is stressed, has
an extensive religious and cultur-
al program mapped out, but this
is being developed very gradually
only because of the lack of funds
for such purposes. Vaad Haat-
zalah - Rehabilitation representa-
tives collaborating with the Chief
Rabbi's Emergency Council in
London have already transmitted
1,400,000 Zloti to Polish Jewry.
Vaad Haatzalah - Rehabilitation
announced the approval through
the UNRRA for the dispatch of
70,000 pounds of clothing to Pol-
ish Jewry.

Belgium Jewry shows a &im-
munity w hich is attempting a
gradual return to normalcy. The
need for educational institutions
and religious material is tremen-
dous. Belgian Jewry wants to re-
establish the communal institu-
tions and $100,000 is asked for
aid in Belgium.
18,000 STRANDED
About 18,000 Jews are strand-
ed in Sweden where in addition
to the need for kosher food, clo-
thing and medicine, there is a
great demand for religious arti-
cles.
Of the 350,000 Jews in the
Balkans, 34,000 come from Bu-
covina and Bessarabia and 25,000
have survived Nazi oppression in
northern Transylvania. Of the
latter groups, 5,000 to 6,000 are
orphans. It is estimated that
about 10,000 orphans and lost
children are in non-Jewish homes
and institutions. About 10,000
Polish Jews are also in Romania,
and approximately 15,000 Jewish
youths are in Italy.

admission into Palestine. Condi-
tions there are no better than

lars has been asked by the over-
seas representatives of the Vaud
Haatzalah for meeting immediate
needs in the Balkans.
