several of the branches of the
United Hebrew Schools. These
services are conducted by the
children under the supervision of
the personnel. One of the boys
act as a Chazon, others take part
of the Gabai, the Shamosh, and,
in general, the boys perform all
the functions of the trustees of
the synagogue.
The branch of the United Ile-
brew Schools, located in Central
High School, meets for services

they elected their officers as fol-

A criminal, Hamad Zawata,
described as a notorious murder-
er, was sentenced to three years
in jail for the illegal possession
of a rifle and ammunition. An
editorial in "Davar" reads —
"This Arab (Zawata) was no-
torious as a murderer even be-
fore the 1936 disturbances, Dur-
ing the disturbances he led a
gang and became infamous as a
highway robber, participating lat-
er in Rashid Ali's fascist coup
d'etat in Iraq. He was accused
of numerous murders, including
that of two British constables,
near Nablus, in May, 1943, and
a Jewish auxiliary policeman in
June, 1943. The police offered a
reward of $2000 for his capture.
Yet he was sentenced to only
three years, and two youths, aged
17 and 20 years, were given sev-
en years for the possession of
arms which they used for train-
ing. It isn't for nothing that this
verdict arouses such astonish-
ment."
