Herman Cohen, president of
the Jewish Children's Home at
Petoskey and Burlingame, has
received a letter from Robert J.
Benson, Administrative Supervi-
sor of the Nursery and Extended
School Service§ Program of the
Board of Education, expressing
the community's thanks to the
Board of the Home for having
made its facilities available for
the special war-time child-care
program from Aug. 1 1943 to
Sept. 30, 1945.
The Home, which for more
than a decade, had previously
been used for the institutional
care of Jewish dependent and
neglected children, was offered
for use as a nursery and can-
teen under Board of Education
auspices with the aid of federal
funds under the terms of the
Lanham Act. As many as 100
children were cared for daily.
The services formerly supplied
by the Children's Home to the
Jewish community are now being
administered by the Children's
Bureau of the Jewish Social Ser-
vice Bureau.
The letter from the Board of
Education to Mr. Cohen states:
"We wish to express again our
appreciation for the very fine
contribution made by your com-
mittee. Through the busiest days
of the war emergency as many
as 100 children of employed
mothers were cared for in the
building daily. We feel that with-
out your cooperation that it
would have been impossible for
us to make the service available
to many of these mothers. When
we reflect that a large number
of the mothers using the service
were carrying on while their hus-
bands were in the armed forces
we cannot help but feel that the
cooperation of our two agencies
has made this war period less
trying for these families than it
would have been otherwise."

Rabbi Fram Urges Detroit Jewry
To Attend Annual Balfour Ball Nov. io

"When the leading Jewish
families of Detroit gather for
the Balfou r Ball at the Hotel
Statler on Saturday night,
Nov. 10, they may ver y well
find themselves celebrating a
great victory for the Jewish
Homeland in Palestine. By
Nov. 10, President Harry S.
Truman's demand of Great Bri-
tain, that 100,000 of the dis-
placed Jews of Europe be im-
mediately admitted into Pales-
tine, may have been satisfied.
In this event, the Balfour Ball
will be one of the most joyous
celebrations the Jewish com-
munity of Detroit has ever ex-
perienced."

The above is a quotation from
the statement made by Rabbi
Leon Fram, President of the Zi-
onist Organization of Detroit, at
the opening meeting of the local
District last Monday night, Oct.
15, in the Social Hall of Con-
gregation Shaarey Zedek. The
rabbi went on to say:
"If, however, the Labor Gov-
ernment of Great Britain should
hesitate and hedge in meeting the
demands of world conscience and
Palestine should on Nov. 10 be
the scene of rebillion and strife,
the Balfour Ball will perform an-

October open meeting Tuesday,
Oct. 23, at 12:30 p.m. at Con-
gregation Bnai Moshe. Luncheon-
ette will be served at 12:30 and
the meeting will begin at 1:30.
A feature of the afternoon will
be a "Program of Palestinian
Music" with Miss Drora Selesny
interpreting Palestinian songs,
Guest speaker of the occasion
will be Rabbi Leonard Oschrey of
Yeshivah Beth Yehuda. Rabbi
Oschrey who comes from Johan-
nesburg, So. Africa, was an ac-
tive Mizrachist in his native city
and is a dynamic speaker.
A membership drive will be
launched under the chairmanship
of Mrs. A. DeRoven and Mrs. I.
Zeff. Reports will be presented of
new strides being made in the
field of store cooperation. Mrs.
Israel Kaplan and her committee

other function — the Jewish peo-
ple of Detroit will gather at this
affair to reenforce their morale
in the struggle for justice for
the Jewish people.
"The Balfour Ball will then be
a great rally to express the de-
termination of Detroit's Jewry to
employ all of the strength of
American sympathy and Ameri-
can idealism in the achievement
of a home for the homeless of
our people."
Harry Cohen, chairman of the
Balfour Ball Committee, asked
all workers to follow the example
of Dr. Joseph Starman who has
been selling patron tickets by
the hundreds. Dr. Starman is a
member of the Board of the Zion-
ist Organization of Detroit and
was last year the leading mem-
bership campaigner for the or-
ganization, having personally en-
rolled 100 new members for Zion-
ism.
The proceeds of the Balfour
Ball go to support the work of
the Zionist Organization of De-
troit. A feature of the Ball this
year will be the dancing of the
famous Palestinian folk dance --
, the "Hera" — by a group of lo-
cal Zionist youth.
