isn't blowing solo, though. Ile
has accompaniment; Goldberg,
Oppenheimer, Segal, Greenberg
• •nd Levy are blowing ther own
ens separately, each in his own
y, competitively and at the
same time.
Each attempts a louder sound.
One day Ginsburg or perhaps it
or Segal, or Greenberg, or Levy
had an idea by which to show
how much more an important
man he was than any of the
others.
Rosh Hashonah was com i ng on
and something should be done
about that. He had in mind noth-
ing less than a political coup.
He would show that he was a
man who could knock at the very
doors of the Capitol and be ad-
mitted.
He sprang the announcement
one evening at the meeting of
the Jewish organization of which
he is president . . . have big
news", he said. "I have reason
to believe that a great honor is
coming to the Jewry of this com-
munity. I'm not in a position to
tell everything but I can say
that it's going to be something
from Congressman Zilch."
the congressman! Congressman
Zilch's Rosh Hashonah message
said that he shared with the Jews
of his district their joy at the ap-
proach of Rosh Hashonah. He
was happy to recall that some of
his best friends were Jews.
At th e next meeting of his
organization President Ginsberg
(or Goldberg, Oppenheimer, Se-
gal, Greenberg, Levy) called at-
tention to the honor that had
come to Israel in the Rosh Ha-
shonah mesage direct from Wash-
ington. He 'said he could feel no
little pride in the fact that he
himself had been instrumental
in bringing it about.
Morris Waldman
Retires from JDC
NEW YORK (JTA) — After
17 years of service, Morris D.
Waldman, vice-chairman of the
executive committee of the Amer-
ican Jewish Committee, has, at
his request, been granted retire-
ment, it was announced by Judge
Joseph 111. - Proskauer, committee
president, and Jacob Blaustein,
chairman of the executive com-
mittee. Mr. Waldman, who is 66,
will henceforth be relieved of all
professional duties and respon-
sibilities, but will continue his
association with the committee as
a lay member of the organiza-
tion's executive committee.
Mr. Waldman held the post of
European director of the Medico-
sanitary and War Orphans De-
partments of the American Joint
Distribution Committee during
1921-22 when he substantially
raised the level of Jewish health
in Eastern Europe. With the
growth of anti-Semitism in the
United States, he organized in
1933 a comprehensive educa-
tional program aimed at familiar-
izing the American people with
the general situation in Germany
and the plight of the Jews. Un-
der his leadership, a public re-
lations department, originally
called the "survey committee,"
was established within the Ameri-
can Jewish Committee.
In the later years of Mr. Wald-
man's administration, the Ameri-
can Jewish Committee established
a Research Institute for Peace
and Post-War Problems, Mr.
Waldman strongly advocated the
promulgation of an international
bill of rights to safeguard mi-
norities throughout the world.
That's the way it happens that
politicians give Rosh Hashonah
greetings or that they give ful-
some indorsements to this Jewish
cause or that. They may know
nothing about Rosh Hashonah or
the Jewish causes which they in-
dorse so whole-heartedly; but it's
something Jewish and one of
their constituents had asked them
and they couldn't turn him down,
considering the Jewish vote.

Hebrew Institute
Approved for GIs
NEW YORK, (JTA) — The
Hebrew Institute of Technology
at Haifa has been approved by
the Veterans Administration for
the education and training of
American veterans under the G.I.
Bill of Rights, it was announced
by the American Society for the
Palestine Institute of Technology.
The approval of the institute

the society from H. V. Stirling,
director of the vocational rehabi-
litation and educational service
of the Veterans Administration.
Under this ruling, qualified and
eligible veterans will be able to
study engineering and industrial
arts at the Institute in Haifa,
and while pursuing their studies

fits of the G. I. Bill of Rights,

rollment at an approved institu-
tion, and for payments up to
$500 a year for each veteran to
the institution to cover tuition
fees and other expenses.
Anti-Semite Jailed at
Christian Front Rally
NEW YORK, (JTA) — The
first Christian Front meeting to
be held here since 1941 ended
in the arrest of Homer Maertz,
notorious Chicago anti-Semite,
who was distributing a pamph-
let entitled "Jewish Ritual Mur-
der." The charge against Maertz
was that he was "distributing
false, malicious, vicious, inflam-
matory literature calculated to
cause a breach of the peace."
Isadore Ginsberg, the com-
plainant, was also arrested when
a friend of Maertz filed a dis-
orderly conduct charge against
him,
NEW YORK, (JTA)—Various
Jewish groups are prepared to
provide a $1,000,000 bond if the
over 900 refugees in Fort Os-
wego are released and allowed

they could legally re-enter this
country, Rep. Samuel Dickstein
said, revealing that he had sent
a telegram to President Truman
urging him to provide "a per-
manent refuge for the few hun-
dred here."
Rep. Dickstein said that a sub-
committee of the House Com-
mittee on Immigration and Natu-

during a hearing at the camp last
summer that under the existing
law, means can be found to al-
