Detroit Jewry's Resolution
To the British Government
Thousands of citizens of the City of Detroit are meeting to
express their indignation and protest against the continuation
of one of the greatest crimes of modern history and to demand
that justice be done to the thousands of victims of this crime.
The White Paper of May, 1939, issued in a period when dem-
ocratic countries were living in terror of actual and threatened
fascist aggression, and which placed an arbitrary limit upon the
immigration of Jews into Palestine, has been responsible for the
death of thousands of European Jews, who might otherwise have
found a sanctuary and a home in Palestine. The continued en-
forcement of this infamous White Paper dooms the thousands
of surviving Jews to a similar tragic and undeserved fate.
Since the beginning of the war in 1939, close to 6,000,000
Jews have been exterminated on the continent of Europe. Only
since achievement of victory over Nazi Germany by the United
Nations has the world at large come to learn of the indescrib-
ably horrible treatment and fate of these millions of men, wo-
men and children. The facts of this destruction were known for
many months before they were made generally public. Repeated,
desperate pleas for help went unanswered, except for fruitless
expressions of sympathy, by officials and statesmen who claimed
that "the exigencies of war" prevented any real action.
Now the war is happily over. Liberated nations are beginning
to enjoy their freedom again. Thousands of Nazi slaves are re-
turning to their homes to rebuild their lives. But the 1,250,000
Jews who remain alive in Europe have not been truly liberated.
Thousands continue to live in the concentration camps where
they had been tortured and starved by the Nazis. The report
of Mr. Earl Harrison to the President of the United States is
full confirmation of this. Thousands more roam the highways of
Europe, desperately seeking a way out to freedom and security.
This way out is barred because the White Paper bars their
entry into Palestine. With the White Paper still in effect, Pales-
tine, which by the solemn pledges of the British Government,
confirmed by all the civilized countries of the world, was to
become the Jewish National Homeland, is now the only country
in the world where specifically anti-Jewish laws are in effect.
This White Paper, which was condemned as illegal by the
Mandates Commission of the League of Nations, must be abro-
gated. Those Jews of Europe who wish to enter Palestine and
rebuild their lives there must be given the opportunity and the
freedom to do so. Upon the heads of those who have the power
to grant this opportunity, and who withhold it, will fall the full
blame and condemnation of all those who cherish humanity and
decency.

We appeal with particular reason to the present Government
of Great Britain. This Government was elected on and is com-
mitted to a program of expanding justice, security and well-
being for all the people of Great Britain, and for the oppressed
people of all nations and all lands. We sincerely pray that it
may be given to this Government to realize its objectives. How-
ever, we must affirm that it will be a hideous travesty and be-
trayal of their pledges if this Government will not act now in
the spirit of their many assurances in the past. In 1939, leaders
of the present Government, then in the Opposition, denounced
the White Paper, and asserted that they would not be bound by
it if they should assume the responsibilities of Government. In
1945, on the eve of the recent elections, the British Labor Party
stated that:
"There is surely neither hope nor meaning in a 'Jewish Na-
tional Home' unless we are prepared to let Jews, if they wish,
enter this tiny land in such numbers as to become a majority.
There was a strong case for this before the war. There is an
irresistable case now, after the unspeakable atrocities of the
cold and calculated German Nazi plan to kill all the Jews in
Europe."
Now is the time to reaeem these pledges, to fulfill these prom-
ises, or forfeit the trust of countless friends in all parts of the
world. Hundreds of thousands of homeless Jews are clamoring
for a home in a free, democratic Jewish Commonwealth in Pal-
estine. Words of sympathy are not enough. We ask that the
gates of Palestine be opened immediately to Jews, and that the
Jewish people be enabled to establish Palestine as a Jewish
Commonwealth.

Jews Condemned
Christ's Crucifixion
JERUSALEM (JTA) — The
crucifixion of Jesus was condemn-
ed, not approved, by the Jews
who were his contemporaries, a
startling discovery by Hebrew
Universtiy archaeologists reveals.
Last week, a group from the
university uncovered a set of
caves which date back from the
period of the Second Temple. In
them they found inscriptions and
emblems from the time of Jesus,
which, beyond a doubt, expressed
the Jews' extreme dissatisfaction
with the sentence passed upon
Christ by the Romans.
