Jewish Chaplains

NEW YORK - The work of
Jewish chaplains in the armed
forces overseas has been com-
mended by Generals Dwight D.
Eisenhower, Douglas MacArthur
and Joseph Stilwell and by Fleet
Admiral Chester W. Nimitz in
letters to Dr. Louis Finkelstein,
president of the Jewish Theolog-
ical Seminary of America.
The message contained greet-
ings to 100 graduates of the sem-
inary and to members of the
Rabbinical Assembly of America
who served in World War II. A
dinner in their honor will be
given at the Hotel Waldorf-As-
tria on Nov. 7.

Jewish Fund Raising Agencies
See Continued Record Giving ,

NEW YORK - A confident
and generally optimistic outlook
for fall fund-raising is held by
campaign leaders of philanthropic
agencies throughout the country,
according to analyses and opin-
ions submitted by them to the
Council of Jewish Federations
and Welfare Funds. They cited
the following factors:
The immediate general outlook
is favorable.
Cutbacks are temporary fac-
tors which may reduce contribu-
tions from employes, but other
classes of givers are expected to
take up the. slack.
Business people, especially
those in manufacturing, have
substantial accumulated profits to
more than offset any possible re-
conversion losses.
Tax exemptions continue as an
incentive to philanthropic giving.
Basic factor is psychological
attitude. This is the year of lib-
eration and the opportunities for
constructive aid abroad are un-
surpassed, At home we can. plan
with courage and imagination for
the needs of today and tomor-
row.
The long range outlook is
somewhat more uncertain and
will depend on economic and po-
litical factors which are now in
the making.

Club to be held Oct. 30 at the
Statler Hotel. This dinner is open

A well-balanced program for

Federation, in commenting on the
fall fund drives, stated:
"For the first time in years,
the tortured of Europe now dare
to cry out in their suffering. Now
after all these years, we can hear
their cries. We can reach them,
we can help them.
"Where before we helped hun-
dreds who managed to escape, we
must now help thousands. Where
before we stood by helplessly be-
yond the borders of Nazi terr-
itory and waited for a handful to
come to us, now we can go to
them and give them material
help, limited now not by our en-
emy's power, but only by the ex-
tent of our own generosity. This,
at last, is the, year of liberation."
The Council of Jewish Federa-
tions and Welfare Funds is a na-
tional cooperative association
providing fact-finding and con-
sultation services for the organ-
ized Jewish communities of the
United States and Canada. Es-
tablished in 1932 to help plan and
finance Jewish communal services,
its membership now numbers 266
agencies in 234 cities.
