TRUE STORY .. .
Two Jewish young men were
taking an evening stroll.
One, H.. a medical student, the
other, S., active in his father's
business. . • . A gang of a dozen
or more Gentile youths stopped
p them. . . . The gang leader cor-
nered II. and asked him sneer-
ingly "What nationality are you?"
.. H. answered, "American, of
course." . . . The gang let out a
howl of derision. . . . "Wrong,
you God d--- Jew . • . you're a
Jew b - - - d" . . . Without fur-
ther notice H. was subjected to a
brutal beating knocking out his
teeth and injuring his head. . . ,
He managed somehow to escape.
... For weeks he had to undergo
medical treatment.. . . His friend
S. got off easier . .. just a few
► blows. . . . The incident was re-
ported to the police but no action
was taken by the protectors of
the law. . . . No this did not hap-
pen in Hitler's Germany. . . . It
happened in New York a few
weeks ago. . .. . But there are
Jewish organizations who still call
that kind of thing "delinquency."
"NO EVIDENCE" .. .
The District Attorney's office
of Brooklyn held a hearing on
the Brighton Beach anti-Semitig
riot. • . . For days it questioned
witnesses, Jewish and non-Jew-
ish. . .. The assistant District
Attorney in charge of the exam-
ination was Mr. Rosenberg, son
of an orthodox rabbi. . .. When
the hearing was all over, Rosen-
berg solemnly announced (not
publicly as yet) that the exam-
ination did not uncover any evi-
dence of anti-Semitism or any or-
ganized direction. . . . So what
happened. . . . At almost th'
; very same minute that Rosenberg
made his amazing statement, four
Gentile youhgsters broke into the
Brighton Beach synagogue, car-
ried out a handful of prayerbooks
and burned them in approved
Nazi style on a nearby field. . , .
But still some Jewish leaders are
terribly busy keeping the incident
from public print. . . .

World Jewry Urged
To Fight Forced
Return of Refugees

TEL AVIV ( Palcor)—World-
wide Jewish protests against re-
ported plans for the forcible re-
patriation of Polish Jews still in
camps in the American-occupied
zone of Germany, was urged by
all six Hebrew newspapers in Pal-
estine: Davar, Haaretz, Haboker,
Hatzofeh, Hamashkif and Mish-
mar, representing all political
trends in Palestine.
(The Independent Jewish Press
Service, in a Paris dispatch, said
that reports had reached Jewish
leaders that Gen. Eisenhower's
headquarters informed Jewish-
Polish inmates of camps in the
American zone that they would
soon be repatriated. The dispatch
also said that members of the
staffs of Generals Eisenhower .
and Zhukov (Soviet) had arrived
in Katowice, Poland, to negotiate
repatriation with Polish officials.
A Polish Press Agency report
from Warsaw confirmed the re-
port.) •

PLAIN TALK

(Continued from page 4)
ebrate the beginning of the year
2000 with the decorum of a man,
becoming to a man of 55. He will
look at the prodigious matter sol-
emnly as, in the presence of his
relatives and friends, he raises
his glass in salutation.
He speaks: "I am the common
man of the 21st century whom
my grandfather, in prophetic
mood, wrote about back in 1945.
It is fitting on this occasion to
look back historically to the time
of my poor old grandfather."
He says his grandfather made
a great deal of the matter of be-
ing a Jew. . . . "You might say
that my grandfather made a pro-
fession of being a Jew. Every
week he used to write a piece
about it. Being a Jew then was
something special in mankind,
with special problems and special
pains.
"My grandfather seemed to
have no trouble to fill up a col-
umn about it every week. As I
look back at his columns, I am
conscious of a deep pathos: It
had come to pass in that time
that being a Jew was the obses-
sion of a Jewish life."
He says that it speaks well for
the prophetic character of his
grandfather that at his brith he
greeted him as the common man
of the 21st century: . . . "My
grandfather wrote at that time
that I was the conuhon man of
the next century."
Yes; that was the great fact of
the 21st century: The Jew had
become a member of the com-
monality. He was one of the
common men. He was no separate
person, no special problem re-
quiring special attention or suf-
fering special discrimination.
"The social justice that we
have achieved in our time has
established the brotherhood and
all mankind is one," says Richard
Sloane Segal. "There is no fear
of Jews, no suspicion, no hate
because for all men alike there is
justice. The table of justice is
full and for all men there is
enough. A Jew is one of corn-
mon man. I regard that as his
greatest historic achievement.
"In this 21st century common
man has at last inherited the
earth and the goodness thereof
and the peace and the Jew has
his just share of it. To be a Jew
is to be like any other member of
a religious groUp and in our time
what difference does it make
whether a man worships at this
altar or at that? In the brother-
hood we know only one Father.
"In my grandfather's troubled
times the Jew, in his frustration
and insecurity, sought refuge in a
number of identities: He thought
of hirnself as a nation or a civ-
ilization or a race — always a
man separate, never a common
man."
Richard suggests that at this
moment it would be fitting to me-
morialize his prophetic grand-
father. . .. "Let us say Kaddish
for him. Let us recite this praise
of the Lord. Yisgadal. - . ."
Anyway, Segal hopes that Rich-
ard will turn out to be as fine a
lad as his namesake, Richard
Sloane. He was an exceptional
child of bright promise.
Yet, being a cautious prophet,
Segal must pray for the morality
of man who lately has had an
atomic bomb put in his hands. If
man's morals don't keep up with
his science he may have blown
himself up before the 21st cen-
tury has come around.
