Jews in Germany held the
first public Rosh Hashonah serv-
ices since the advent of Nazism.
In Munich the services were
conducted at the Prinz Regenten
Theatre, formerly the Munich
Opera House, by Capt. Max B.
Wall, chaplain of the Ninth In-
fantry Division. Before the blow-
ing of the Shofar the audience,
consisting of several hundred lo-
cal Jews and American service-
men, was addressed by the presi-
dent of the Jewish Community
who related the suffering of the
Jews of Germany.
A special prayer was held for
the victims of Nazism and the
congregation stood in silence for
five minutes.
In Berlin the services were held
in a number of synagogues that
had been partly repaired.
In Hamburg the services were
attended by a few hundred Jews,
the only survivors of the 25,000
pre-war Jewish population.
SHANGHAI
Crowded into a ghetto in a cor-
ner of Shanghai, 15,000 Jews
sang and prayed with renewed

years world Jewry can feel a
surge of genuine hope as the New
Year is welcomed. "It has been
the privilege of the National Jew-
ish Welfare Board to contribute,
as the agent of the Jewish com-
munity, to the Allied victory,"
the statement declared. "As we
give voice to our gratitude for
peace and victory, we must renew
our determination to make the
world a better place to live in
during the coming year."
Rosh Hashonah messages were
also issued by the Synagogue
Council of America, the HIAS,
The National Labor Committee

Jewish organizations, all of which
emphasized that the surviving
