Pike St., Pontiac, will usher in Rosh Hashonah at 7:30 Friday evening, Sept. 7. On Saturday and Sunday mornings, services will begin at 8:00 a.m. Rabbi I. Strauss will preach on the first day on the theme: "Something Inside To Sail By in 5706" and on the second, "The Challenge of a New Age." The services will be chanted by Can-. for L. Hershowitz. But I am afraid that, sincere as their good wishes are, the Jews of Europe are not ready to think in terms of "happiness." Long years of persecution and suffer- ing have erased that word from their vocabularies. They are alive, and in that there is joy; but the common hunger and destitution have made food and the reestab- lishment of normal living con- , ditions the paramount thought in each mind. The year 5705 has seen victory, and liberation of 1,250,000 Jews. We pray that 5706 will bring a new life to our brothers in Eur- ope. Then in truth we can say "Happy New Year," for it will be a year of happiness for all.
