,lathe all through the one." The
holiday serves as a kind of ac-
knowledgment of humanity and
misery, as a kind of ethical
exercise. it constant impurities, a
'copping away of mpurities, a
seless going through t h e
me, and a recognition of man's
feebleness. When they are hum-
ble, God can recognize his chil-
dren most clearly.
The Rosh Hashonah holiday
permits the Jew to partake of
his people's past. He has at last
become the keeper of his broth-
Hi people's misery as well
p ' er. His
1 as their trust become part of
him. Through the subtle influ-
ence of the ritual he is permit-
ted to undergo misfortunes and
hardships not his own. It is the
Aristotlean catharsis at work.
His sympathies expand. "Mod-
ern" a n d "ancient" become
meaningless -words to him. As he
prays his condition is no longer
his own. He feels secure under
the judgment of Jehovah, be-
cause he, too, gives love, and he,
too, is a sufferer.
f The mystic trance begins to
envelop the universe. He be-
comes the eternal lover, and the
eternally beloved. The transcen-
dental spirit of his prayer
broods over all time. In his love
he becomes the echo of an eter-
nal Providence. If he can la-
ment the Babylonian exile, and
feel the lash of the Egyptian
overseer—how if he can realize
the pain of things past must it
broaden his capacity to sympa-
thize with fellow men, alive now.
It is because of this that Ju-
daism has kept ever fruitful.
The union of tears shed for an-
tiquity has kept it alive.

DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE and

The

New Year Message

By RABBI LEON FRAM

Of Temple Israel

The New 'teat' 5706 is the
New Year of victory for all
mankind. At the moment, how-
ever, it seems to spell victory
for all peoples except the Jewish
people. Even the Italian, Ger-
man and Japanese peoples arc
victorious, for they hav e gotten
rid of the fascist incubus. The
Jewish people is the only people
still in It state of defeat.

Jews are still dying in the
concentration camps of Germany,
They have not yet been removed
from those camps, and they are
still dying of starvation, in ac-
cordance with Ilitler's plan of
extermination. Jews are still be-
ing killed in wholesale quanti-
ties in Poland. The Nuremburg
laws, if they hav e been abolished
in Germany, still prevail in Pal-
estine, which Jews may not en-
ter because they are Jews, and
where they may not buy land be-
cause they are Jews.

The armies of the Allied Pow-
ers treat the surviving Jews of
Germany as enemies. They are
even denied the right to the spe-
cial consideration being given to
victims of fascism. This sheer
truth that Jews are victims of
Nazism has been denied by the
Allied administration of Ger-
many.
This must he Our prayer and
resolve for the New Yea•—that
we shall mobilize all the moral
forces which the Jewish people
possesses to refuse to let the lib-
erated world impose upon us
this cruel, unearned and humi-
liating role of being the one de-

feated people. We must unite
and speak with one voice in be-
half of the immediate rescue of
our people from the concentra-
tion camps; of the immediate
rescue of our people from the
lands where they are still sub-
jected to the pogroms, and of
the immediate restoration of the
right of the homeless Jews of
Europe to enter their homeland,
Palestine. Only if our united
prayers and our united action
can accomplish this recognition
of the human rights of the Jew-
ish people, can this New Year,
.the year of victory for all man-
kind, be also a year capable of
affording some measure of hap
piness also to the Jewish people.

The Religious School of Tem-
ple Israel opens its sessions Sun-
day morning, Sept. 9, at Hamp-
ton Public School, 18460 War-
rington Drive.
Rabbi Leon Frans will greet
the pupils. Classes ranging from
