ZIPRIN No other people look to the New Year with so simultaneous an eye. It is looked to with hope. Festivity rules it. If the joy the Jewish people bring to this holiday were exam- ined by a Gentile historian, it would be no fault of his if he left the problem as confused as he came to it. Rosh Hashonah, tra- ditionally regarded as the day of creation, is also the day the Lord remembers his children, the day the lot of those children is determined. It is the day of judgment. During its hour the past is weighed and the future decided ; all deeds are exam- ined, all motive discovered, and our inmost thoughts are finally laid bare before the creator. How, the historian must ask, can a people, ancient or modern (and the happy spirit of the Rosh Hashonah Holiday is now it ever was) bring joy to so fearful a trial, so dread and im- possible a commencement? Each religion in itself brings a con- stant and undiminishing sense of judgment with it at all times, during every hour, and on all days. Its followers come to that day with fear. If one has faith, "the logical attitude of ap- proach," to use a school man's phrase—must be one of fear. No orthodox person thinks of his fu- ture without terror. For Jew and Gentile alike, judgment is an awesome thing. How then can the Jew, being first of all a human being, ex- clude himself from the natural sensations all men must expe- rience before the divine jurisdic- tion? Somewhere an abnormality exists. Not only on that (lay is the past to be judged, but the fu- ture is to be determined and ir- revocably written on the tablet of every man's destiny. 170 W.
